Songs to be sung during ceremony?? Not cliche!

Martins, on June 15, 2016 at 5:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

My 2 aunts and my mother will be singing together during the ceremony and I am having trouble coming up with songs that are not cliche and overdone. (All the other discussions on here name the same 5 or 6 songs.) I would prefer a country song that is sung by a woman, but I am open to others as well. Any ideas?

I love "I Run To You" and "Hello World" by Lady Antebellum. And, I'm a musical theatre girl, so I'd be remiss if I didn't throw in a few of those, lol. Smiley winking "I'll Cover You" from Rent (and/or the reprise), "grow old with you" from The Wedding Singer, "Why Do I Love You" and "You Are Love" from Showboat, "My Funny Valentine" from Babes In Arms, "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" and "I could write a book" from Pal Joey. "Always" by Scott Alan (sung by Sutton Foster on his album), about a thousand songs by Cole Porter ("Night and Day", "So In Love", "Let's Do It / Let's Fall In Love", etc). Then for pop, there's "To Make You Feel My Love" by Adele, which is gorgeous. Among many others. Hope that helped!

A friend sang "I'll still be loving you" by Restless Hearts (our song in 1987). But, I will tell you this -- it was the longest 3 minutes of our lives while we just stood there looking at each other in the middle of the ceremony.

Unless you're getting married in a place of worship where songs during the ceremony are typical -- ask them to sing during the prelude (before the processional) or as the recessional song.

Oh thank you so much! Those are great suggestions. I love music and musical theatre! I have too many songs on my list and have to narrow them down, but when coming up with a song for them to sing, I was just drawing a blank. I thought about "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge, but thought it may be too intense. Also, It is on a farm and I was planning on having it during the prelude or during our "unity ceremony" (It's not a candle or sand), so thank you for your input on when they should sing; it helps me narrow it down!

Have you heard "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes?

Yes and I love that song! I'm having it played at a different point at my reception.

I would steer away from pop songs - every time I've heard them done at a wedding (and especially by older singers) it's just stilted and awkward. Classics are good, either religious (Ave Maria) or golden oldies (Nat King Cole, The Beatles, etc)

Not traditional or anything at all, but one of my favorite songs is When the Day Met the Night by Panic! At the Disco (from their folksy/country album a while back). If you're having a more formal ceremony though this would admittedly be out of place. It's very upbeat and fun.
