Song suggestion with invitations?

SemperFiKelly143, on October 11, 2015 at 7:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

I've heard of brides putting in a little card with invites where guest can suggest a song, and send it back with their rsvp if they plan on coming. That way not only will there be a good mix of music, but people will get excited(and hopefully up dancing) once they hear their song. Has anyone done this before? Did guests even bother filling it out? Any thoughts are welcome! My dh thinks it's kind of pointless, I'm going back and forth on the idea.

My fiance and i have already decided to go the complete opposite route and forbid song requests at the reception. between our wild college friends and our teenage cousins, we think it's just too risky!

but if you can trust your guests to make good and appropriate suggestions then i say go for it! my only fear would be that people may have hurt feelings if they fill out the card and don't have their song played? and of course, you run the risk of suffering through songs you hate. but then again that probably depends on how picky you are with music. my fiance and i are VERY picky with our music and playlist.

My friend did this with her rsvps. I filled mine out with my song request, however the dj at the wedding DID NOT play it. It was that "Wobble" song!! It was a bit dissapointing!

I don't think I will do this though, WW website has a song request page you can add which is the route I may go with.

My friend did it and she said most people didn't fill it out. And I filled it out on my card and neither of the songs were played. But worse case scenario if you do it you can get some song ideas.

Yeah I was thinking about it, but I read on the forums that it can lead to an excessive number (and random quality) of "must play" songs. My friends' recent wedding DJ took verbal requests and worked them in when it was appropriate. I thought that was fine!

Call them song "suggestions" not "requests" then toss the ones you don't like. Average song time is approximately 3 minutes so unless you have a very small guest list you wouldn't be able to make it through all the suggestions anyway. If someone gets mad just tell them there wasn't enough time to get through them all and you had a lot of great suggestions.

RSVPs take long enough, to be returned. They'll probably sit around (incomplete) even longer, if guests have to come up with choices. With many, it's difficult enough, to write-in their names and make a X, and mail it back.

I'm thinking about putting one on my website for guests to enter there, but not in the invite.

We are putting the song request option on our website, and will be directing people to the website for info on hotel, directions, etc. on the invites. RSVP cards will be separate.

Only one invitation we've ever received asked for suggestions. The RSVP card also qualified the request, by writing, "except songs by the XXXXX Band." A song by that band would have been my first choice. Somehow, I expected I wouldn't be having fun, at that reception.
