Song List

Christina, on February 18, 2020 at 11:30 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13

Hi! We have decided to not use a DJ but just download songs and plug one of our phones into the sound system at our venue. Has anyone else done this? Looking for some song ideas, good dance songs. Iv'e been told a lot of the songs I picked are too old, too slow or too rock.

Our DJ told us that in his experience (he's been DJing for more than 20 years), people get up and moving to like 70's, 80's, and sometimes 90's hits. He said he hardly ever gets requests for any of today's hits, they just aren't something you dance to and most aren't appropriate for a wedding with older relatives or younger children.

That being said, if you REALLY want to have that dance vibe where people get up off their feet, I would highly recommend hiring a DJ if it's at all in your budget. DJ's do so much for the atmosphere of a wedding that a playlist and speakers just doesn't do on it's own. We originally didn't plan on getting a DJ, but I'm so glad we reconsidered. Just my opinion, best of luck to you!

We didn't have a DJ (we used a spotify playlist) and it went over really well! A few things though... make sure you have someone responsible for MCing (like, making announcements, encouraging people to get up and dance, etc) and to manage the playlist. It really isn't enough to just press "play" and let the playlist go... you need to change songs if people aren't responding, adjust the volume, etc.

Another thing is don't be afraid to go off-playlist! We used our playlist for about 30 mins and then my husband's best man (who we had put in charge of manning the playlist) and I ended up just picking some off-playlist songs because we felt like they would fit the mood really well, and THAT was when people actually started getting up and dancing.

A DJ definitely does WAY more than just pressing play on songs. I cannot emphasize how important it is to read the room in order to choose what song (or what type of song) to play next. That being said, I still don't think hiring an actual DJ is "necessary" if you have a friend or relative who would enjoy taking on this responsibility (and who you trust to do so!)

Thanks I will look though older decades hits. A DJ just isn't in the budget.

I'll have to check spotify out, I was think of just downloading songs from my itunes and put them in some kind of order. We are asking one of my uncles to be the designated MC.

Nefetera - itunes. You can make a playlist and pick to either have it shuffled or play in order.

We are doing the same thing and I have picked so many slow songs. Leaving it up to FH to pick some up tempo songs to even it out.
