Something old?

Brianne, on January 23, 2022 at 2:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 3 5
I’m getting married in December this year and I was looking for my mom’s wedding dress and veil that she had at her wedding. My mom passed away in 2004 when I was 14 and I would love to have a part of her with me during the day. Her veil was also actually a hat veil (very 70’s/80’s look, but very beautiful).

Sadly, the dress and veil is not in the best condition. The dress is stained and the veil has a hole in it and the hat is bent out of shape. I’m not really planning on wearing the dress, but I am planning to wear the veil (either with the hat or detach it) and we are planning on preserving her dress with the veil after the wedding
My question is, how do I repair the hole in the veil without being TOO noticeable and clean the veil/hat, and how to at least clean the dress so it’s more presentable?

Ask local bridal stores for their preferred alterations vendors (if they don’t have one in-house) and cleaners. Several of the vendors I was recommended to contact for my wedding dress had experience working on veils. I’m taking my mom’s veil with me to my first fitting/alterations appointment next month to see if they have any recommendations for it to lay flatter on top (or perhaps rework it into a headband or clip, as it’s currently attached to a headpiece that sits on the crown of your head).

For the hole, could you put some kind of embroidered/lace piece over it? Perhaps put embellishments of some kind over all of it to hid any tears or rips and so it's not jut over that one spot. Or, perhaps it can be cut down to remove the damaged part? It's hard to say without a picture, and knowing what materials the veil and hat are made of.

It’s not the greatest picture but it’s a big triangle hole towards one side of the veil.Something old? 2
It’s not the GREATEST photo but the hat ‘s brim will need to be straighten out. But I think the veil is most tule with a lace boarder and the hat I think is the same material.

If the hat can’t be saved/fixed, we were thinking in detaching the veil and placing it on a comb or something else, but this was before we saw the condition of it.

I think your best bet for cleaning the veil would be to put it in a bath with some mild detergent and let it soak. There's this article about how to clean/look after an old veil too!

I'm honestly not sure about the hat, you might need to take that to a professional.

See if you can find a milliner in your area. Or a bridal seamstress. They work with bridal fabrics and could at least give you an idea of how the veil might be repaired.
