Something Borrowed: What and How?

I always thought the tradition of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue was cute and it's been important to me that I have one of each on my wedding day. I was talking to my mom tonight and realized I don't have a something borrowed. First, what is your something borrowed?...

My GMA passed away 5mths ago, so I called my aunt to ask if I could borrow her wedding rings. She not only had her wedding rings she still had the box they came in 70yrs ago. And the box her rings came in were given so brides would always have something blue. So I have something blue and borrowed. And my fiance wants to carry it in his front pocket because his GMA passed away a yr ago and we will add something in it of hers .

I'm wrapping the hankerchief my Gramma gave to my sister on sister's wedding day around my bouquet. I was close to my Gramma, and she's been gone for 11 years now. Her last words to me were "marry Bryan". Since I'm finally fulfilling my Gramma's wish, My sister offered it to me to borrow, so I didn't have to ask.

My mom asked if I would like to wear my grandmother's bracelet. It's perfect with my dress, so that was easy. If it hadn't matched, however, I probably would have skipped the tradition. Or, my engagement ring also belonged to my grandmother, so that would technically count, though I suppose it's mine now? In any case, it is my something old. Something new is easy: dress, shoes, necklace, etc. Something blue will probably be blue toenail polish.

I am borrowing a tiara from my brothers wife. I mentioned wanting one for the reception and she was sent a picture with the caption "something borrowed?" Of course I accepted.

I dont have anything blue. Does blue thistle count?

My something borrowed is also my something old. It's a set of crystal costume jewelry that my grandmother got in the 1940s. My mom is lending it to me.

I will probably borrow a necklace from my mom and wrap it around my wrist as a bracelet or see if my SIL has something she can let me borrow from when she got married. I'd like to have something blue, something new, something old, and something borrowed but it's not 100% something I have to have.

A friend of mine offered to let me borrow her diamond earrings but the wedding weekend was so crazy I never got a chance to get them from her. I got a penny from Nonna and just got glued it to the bottom of my shoe. It's cute!

@Pia- I hope thistle counts or I dropped the ball on the blue too. Lol! I had my something old, new and the penny.

I borrowed my mom's pearls and a bracelet from my grandma. (Both could have also counted as my old). I really just asked. "Hey Mom, you mean so much to me and I want to honor you by wearing your pearls on my wedding day." My mom cried. My grandma, though I expected her to care more, was much less affected.

Just ask! It's not rude, you're borrowing! That's the whole idea!

I've heard of people borrowing shoes, veil, hairpieces, etc too.

If you go to a renaissance fair you may be able to find an actual sixpence. We are doing a masquerade ball reception. The couple who are making our mask (found them at the renaissance fair) gave me one for my shoe. I cried when they gave it to me because so many people forget that part.

FH has jeweley from his grandmother that includes an antique blue ring. His step mom and aunt wore it as something borrowed/blue.

I was going through a similar issue. My dress is champagne and grey, so I did not feel like I had a lot of options for borrowing. I recently had a conversation with FH's grandfather, he has very fond memories of his late wife of 60+ years whom passed a little over a year ago. Turns out, her veil is a perfect match to my dress! FH's grandfather was extremely honored that I was bringing a part of his wedding day into ours. FMIL loves the idea, she does not have any daughters so it means a lot that I am using something from her family. You can't go wrong asking a mother, grandmother, aunt, sister. Most likely they will feel honored you thought about them.
