Something blue /something borrowed

Technically, if you want to follow the tradition of old new borrowed and blue, then you need to have all of these items on you at the time of your ceremony- so having a friend attend your wedding wearing blue would not count as your “something blue”. I would suggest doing something a lot less complicated anyway. Maybe paint your toenails a light blue or have a blue ribbon around the stem of your bouquet, or you could even wear blue shoe inserts! As far as your “something borrowed”, it is definitely OK to ask someone if you can borrow an item for the ceremony

You could have your friend do a reading during the ceremony, like from a book that influences you and your FH. Personally I have a guy friend who I'm having do a scripture reading bc he's my MOH's ex so I couldn't have him in the wedding party. So that's how I'm honoring our friendship. Your something blue friend could do something similar! ^-^
