SO Frustrated! *UPDATE** Am i wrong?

BC42917, on February 3, 2017 at 3:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

So around mid August FH and I went to my catholic church to get everything started to proceed with the marriage prep. Well around early September we went to take a FOCCUS test and they said they were sending it somewhere to get reviewed and that I should be hearing back soon. That was about 7-8 months out till the wedding, they say it usually takes about 6 months and I am now less than 3 months left till the big day and I still haven't heard back from them. I'm not trying to make excuses but Ive been so busy working 2 jobs and I know I should've called sooner but now I don't know what I should do. Should I start thinking of a plan b? I've been calling and calling since last month and they keep telling me to wait and that they should be getting back to me to schedule some classes but I specifically went so early so we'd have plenty of time to get everything done without being rushed. And now I feel that they're going to be rushing us and that's the last thing I need. contd in comments

    The NFP class for a catholic ceremony is 10 weeks long so I would definitely call them ASAP if you haven't signed up yet! The other classes we had to do were gods plan for a joy filled marriage which is one day and engaged encounter which is one weekend.

    We had problems with our first church. We met with the priest one time and we were told after that they would set our date, but they kept pushing us back and even said "they're others ahead of you, you'll have to wait" so we switched churches and meet with the priest tomorrow. I believe we only have to do a weekend thing and meet with the priest every now and then.

    Ive called once in January and she told me to wait a couple of weeks for them to contact me and if they don't call me by then to call her back. Well it's been over 2 weeks and so I called back today and she was like let me call over there and of course the person wasn't in today so she emailed her. I found an NFP class online. Does that take longer?

    Talk to your priest- he should be able to help. You can do pre Cana in one day at some places

    So we had a similar issue. We contacted the secretary at the church multiple times at the 6 month mark and she never responded to calls or emails. I was getting worried myself and i felt uncomfortable harrassing the secretary at a church. It wasnt until after mass one day that the priest told me the secretary doesnt check email or voicemails. Even when I went in person to the office she blew me off. We finally got to take the FOCCUS test and after wards the secretaryblost our results and we had to take it again. At that point I was pissed. We talked with the priest and he was totally understanding and said he would manage everything. We did not do the NFP class cause thats not of interest to us nor was it mandatory. We just did the confrence that was a few hours on a Saturday. Once the secretary was removed from the situation everything was much better. I hope you are able to at least find a plan B.

    You can do the FOCCUS online! We just did that and will meet with our priest at the end of March to discuss. I had to pay a $15 fee for both of us to take it.

    I guess it just depends on the diocese! The nfp class, marriage class and engaged encounter as well as the focuss exam were all required for us. My sister who did her marriage prep in San Francisco was only required to take a one day class so it's different everywhere. There was a specific online nfp class we had to take through our diocese and we did it online. You have to log your temperatures for a minimum of 10 weeks so it's the same length as the in person class. When we took the foccus exam it was given to our priest right away and he graded it and we discussed it at our next meeting. I don't believe it was ever sent off somewhere but I could be wrong. Reading these responses makes me wish we would have been in a different city because our marriage prep was a ton of work (not to mention each class was a separate fee). I hope they get back to you soon!! Sending good vibes your way! Smiley smile

    We already took our FOCCUS test back in September. I know we have to take our NFP classes but I found those online. I guess I've just been waiting to hear back from our FOCCUS test to actually do the NFP classes since it is $50 to take it. Im not sure what other things we have to do since we only met with our priest once and he was new to the church too. Im just starting to stress out about it lol

    I'm lost...what's NFP? The only other thing we've been told to do is sign up for pre-cana, which I just mailed in the registration form for.

    Take the NFP online! Trust me it is way easier than doing the classes. All you need to do is set aside one day in your PJ's and you can get it done. Make sure your internet is fast though! There are so many videos.

    edit:words are hard

    Here's what we had to do:

    * Natural Family Planning (online - about 30 hours of study time with quizzes)

    * 1-day spiritual conference

    * Foccus review with priest

    * Online pre-marital counseling (about 30 hours with quizzes and online mentors)

    * In person meeting with priest

    * Copies of baptism & confirmation

    * Affidavit of free status to marry

    It took awhile to get all of this but I believe some things can be accelerated and some churches have less requirements. I would go in person to the church secretary and talk to her and see what you can do. They are overworked and underpaid so if you haven't heard back by now I think an in person is the only way you'll get this figured out.

    We took our FOCCUS test in October and did our engaged encounter in November. We will meet with our priest next month for our results.

    Oh boy. Really hoping I don't have to sit through an explanation of how to make/prevent babies. Sigh.

    You should be fine. We got our results back from the test and will have a few meetings with the priest to discuss. So you guys could schedule those are your convenience, however many you will need. As for NFP we are required to take the 1 hour intro class and will only do more classes if we are looking to learn more about it. So there is only one of those. Then as far as Pre Cana, they have a weekend long retreat you can do, but we are opting for the full day long session. So it will be 8-6 on a Saturday. You should be fine.

    We haven't done anything except for our FOCCUS test and that was back in August! We haven't gone over the test or met up with our priest. Nothing!

    Definetly talk to your priest, you could also call your diocese and see if they have online programs available (most do now) for NFP and Pre-Canna. We actually weren't required to take an NFP class, but the option is there if we change our minds. They covered a little bit of it during our Pre-Canna. Guess our Diocese is pretty relaxed haha

    The lady just emailed me back and the only classes available will be March 19- April 23. 6 DAYS before the wedding!! I'm so frustrated because we went several months in advance so we wouldn't have to be worrying about it closer to the wedding but now ill have to be dealing with this till the week of the wedding!! Am I wrong to be so irritated?!
