Snoring!?!

Ruby, on November 29, 2010 at 1:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Oh goodness- he snores so loudly. I'm a very light sleeper. I've such a hard time sleeping whenever I stay over, unless I'm dead tired and passed out before he comes to bed. Oy! Do you have any tips? I can't imagine having earplugs! Smiley sad Thanks!

It could be health related. I would suggest that he see his doctor and ask to be checked out.

At first I thought he had apnea, but his doctor didn't confirm it. Tsk ... tsk ... tsk ...

FH is a snorer. I love the man, but I tell him I swear- someday I'm going to smother him in his sleep!

I've made him agree to do a sleep study. There are machines that can help, or various procedures. It all depends on the reason for the snoring. It's actually caused by the vibrations of the tongue on the back of the throat for most people. Weight can be an issue, or sometimes just the way it's designed.

FH uses the Breathe Right nose strips, and they REALLY help him! I also notice he snores worse when he sleeps on his back. Just turning his head slightly helps- so I actually gently move his head in his sleep. He thinks it's funny. Me, not so much...

A doctor can't confirm apnea by one exam. It takes an overnight sleep study- sometimes 2-3 nights. There are many other reasons for snoring as well.

But I will tell you this- as much as it annoys the crap out of me, I'm used to it and it's kind fo comforting now. It's actually harder for me to fall asleep without him there since I'm so used to the snoring (and the cuddling...).

Snoring is usually a breathing problem. Some people it's as simple as sleeping on their side vs their back (changes angles and can make breathing much easier). Other people those breathe right strips are all they need to open up the airways. Others have bigger problems. Does he have asthma or any other breathing problems?

Mine only snores when he has a cold or bad allergies. But he almost always sleeps on his side, so I can move his head so his chin is tucked in and then he stops snoring.

FS snores only if he is on his back, so when this happens I just nudge him over onto his side and it usually fixes the problem.

Pharmacy type stores sell a snoring spray, or really a STOP snoring spray - it works for both of us but we're not the loud crazy snoring types, just occasional snorts & grunts :-) Good luck!

If he's snoring loudly, a sleep study could be helpful. I just had one done, and it showed I was getting waked up by breathing issues 38 times every hour. This could explain why I was needing 12-14 hours of sleep every night! I now have a CPAP, which has eliminated the snoring and given both of us more restful sleep.

I'll suggest a sleep study to him. Thanks!
