Snacks during cocktail hr?

Monica, on September 22, 2017 at 10:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

Our ceremony is 5:00-5:20 PM, cocktail hr will begin at 5:30, both ceremony and reception are on same location. Dinner probably wont be served until 6:30-7:00 (we haven't made official timeline yet so I'm unsure).

Do I need snacks during this time? We are doing beer and wine upon MIL request, otherwise probably would have been dry wedding because most of our family and friends don't drink just the MIL and her friends and some of their family and it was 20$ pp just for beer and wine, more like 30$ pp for mixed drinks and 40$ pp for premium.

It's 5$ a person just for a cheese and cracker tray and 10$ a person for a selection of 3 O'derves. It's actually cheaper to do a late night snack (2.50 pp).

Are snacks expected, if so is cheese and cracker and fruit tray enough or do I have to do the fancy oderve selection? Is late night snack a better choice than cocktail hr snacks?

We are having approx. 200 people and we can't bring in any outside food unless it's cake (we have cupcakes

Yes, you cocktail type food will be expected during cocktail hour. I would do a selection of three apps. Typically you want 6-7 pieces per person. That is what I tell our couples when I tour them during open house. Cheese, fruit and crackers are fine, but you should add something else too.

Cheese, crackers, fruit and vegetables at a minimum.

I would do the appetizers instead of the late night snacks. People who sit through the ceremony and are waiting for dinner will likely be hungry.

Agree, I'd rather have the cocktail snacks than the late night snack.

So if your wedding were dry, would you still have a "cocktail hour?"

Yes, you need food during this time.

Do both the cheese and crackers and 3 apps. Cocktail hour is usually my favorite part.

It's very uncommon at weddings I've been to to have a snack during cocktail hour but it definitely is important. We're just doing simple snacks (popcorn bar and pretzels and cheese) but you need to have something. I went to a wedding in May with no snacks during a two hour cocktail hour and I got so drunk because I was drinking wine and hadn't eaten all day. I was ready for bed by 8pm lol.

Cocktail hour food is more important than late night snack. People will be hungry and expecting food. Late night snack is a nice surprise but generally not expected. If they get hungry late in the reception you usually have desserts out.

Uh, you definitely need to serve h'orderves at cocktail hour. Drinking on an empty stomach is a horrible way to start the party - no, just cheese and fruit will not cut it

I agree with @rosered and @chip. Cocktail hour is just that: cocktails and cocktail food. Crackers and cheese is nothing.

In no way would cheese crackers and fruit (or popcorn, pretzels, and cheese @AKA) be enough food for a cocktail hour. That's just insane to me.

Yes you need to provide appetizers during cocktail hour. You will want a good variety of hot/cold, meat/non-meat, light/heavy.
