Snacks at a short reception

Teresa, on July 6, 2017 at 1:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hello! I posted before about food at my wedding (which I ended up abandoning at some point with a lot of the answers I was getting) and one of two things rang clear: We need to have a catered meal if the reception goes into eating time, so my husband-to-be and I decided to most likely cut the reception short to end before dinner time since our budget just won't allow to have all those we love while serving a catered meal (for those of you who know the guest list is 150-200, I come from a huge Hispanic family and a very close knit church community and to be honest, I already have to remove 150-200 to get to that number in the first place Smiley xd ). So here's my question: in a short, non-meal-time wedding and reception, will guests typically prefer savory finger foods galore or deserts galore to munch on between dances? There will be both, but which would be preferred in y'all's experience?

It depends on the day for me. A nice mixture of both is a good idea.

I would vote for more savory / finger foods plus some dessert (at least cake). If you do this style of reception, I would suggest a 2pm ceremony followed by the reception with everything wrapped up by 4:30 or 5 at the latest.

ETA - I think a DJ or at least an iPod with background music is appropriate as it adds to the ambiance of the event . Music is always better even if there is no dancing. And a first dance for the bride and groom is still appropriate.

My FH and I briefly entertained this idea and split it down the middle half sweet and half savory. Depends on time of day, I'd assume. If you're doing morning, than brunch-y sweets would make more sense to me but if you fall in "l-inner/ dunch" time I'd expect more savory than sweets.

I think I'd prefer a variety of both savory and sweet to keep it balanced and ensure all of your guests find something that appeals to them.

Generally I'm a finger foods girl. I love canapes and appetizers. I, personally, would suggest the desserts also be in a finger food style (IE cupcakes and cake pops ETC.) over traditional cake which might be hard to eat if you're doing a cocktail style reception without actual tables (if thats the case i mean)

Variety is key for anything so yeah go with savory and light option for both finger foods and desserts and you are good to go.

Id say it would depend on the time of day, I know some people have morning weddings I just couldn't get up early on my wedding day, but if it's to early I wouldn't serve to many sweets. Have food that's acquainted with your cultural background too. Have fun!

I think savory food and cake would be awesome if it's in the afternoon.

Just keep mind you may discover that catering apps/finger foods often ends up being just as expensive as catering a simple meal. There's more prep and work needed to prepare hundreds of small pieces of finger foods.

SAVORY. Sweet food on an empty/booze only stomach is literally awful IMHO.
