Small wedding, should i get a Dj?

Victoria, on August 21, 2019 at 2:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 11

So originally I was going to have a large wedding, but when looking at the cost of everything we decided to downscale significantly.

There was also some health issues related to the date of the original wedding, which was June 2020 in Texas... outside...
So we moved the date to December 2019. Removes the health problem related to the heat, and had a bonus of making it cheaper.

Now my question is: Should I hire a DJ, or just set up a play list and get some speakers to play it off a phone?
The guest count is about 30 people, and that's including the wedding party. It's a pretty small event, so I'm not sure if it would be worth it to actually hire one? Would a DJ lower their price if it is such a small event? Or do they not care about the size?

Our guest count is also 30. We didn’t do a DJ because we didn’t think we had enough people for a party atmosphere but we still wanted live entertainment so we hired a band. It cost the same as a DJ.

It'd be okay if you skipped a DJ, in my opinion!

We had a party of 200 and skipped the DJ. We pre-set a playlist using Spotify, and we also used Serato Pyro which is an app that changes the music for you creating a seamlessly never ending playlist. My father made any announcements needed and once dinner was done, people drank and danced all night. We did rent lights and speaker, but if you are having a smaller wedding, you could probably skip those two things

We have a final guest count of 40 and we have a DJ. I didn't really want one, but FH insisted, so we booked one.

We are expecting 44 and are skipping the DJ. We have speakers and a microphone for the ceremony and speeches. After a quick break for the cake (I used a song that lets me know it's time) we can hit play again and keep the party going. We're also skipping all the other stuff like bouquet tosses and specific dances other than our first dance.

We are having 30 guests too and I was just going to do playlists but my brother offered to DJ for me. But honestly, it would’ve been fine without a DJ. I do like the band idea though.

We're having about 75 people and we're having one, but only because it's a long time friend who is a great DJ and would have been at the wedding anyway, and he's giving us a GREAT deal. I was looking into creating a playlist or having a friend do it. I'm glad to have a DJ, but I'm dancing machine lol

Were having 47 people and i still hired a dj bc they can say ok ladies and gents its time to cut the cake letting you and yoh husband know so your not having to keep track etc all the time but its up to you if yoh can keep track and play list is in your budget then go that route its up to you and your FH and your financial situation to ..

We're having about 20 and I opted not to do a DJ. I think we're going to do a Spotify playlist and just put a friend in charge of keeping an eye on it. Idk what serato pyro is (from previous poster) but I'm definitely going to be googling it. I'm not sure if anyone will be interested in dancing but I'd still like to dance to our song with FH. My only concern is controlling the flow of the evening to make it still feel a little structured. Looking forward to hearing what other brides did!!

A rule of thumb a friend/wedding planner gave me: Fiance picks one thing that's really important to him to splurge on. You pick one thing. And you compromise on a third thing. You make sure those three things are awesome, and anything else you have thats even $200 more than you budgeted for that isn't one of those three categories, you don't go for it. So, if music and everyone getting really into the dance floor is one of those things: go for DJ! If it's not, then don't. Because your wedding is so small, I would consider a DJ a bit of a splurge rather than a necessity (I know not every agrees with that, just my thoughts). If you had a bigger wedding, maybe a different story, but for 30 you're fine. We have a 60 person wedding, we have 2 very high quality speakers we will be setting up and will have a huge list of songs downloaded, as well as a microphone for karaoke or for any one of the charismatic guests we have to decide they want to try their hand at being a goofy dj with the mic. We know our crowd, they aren't huge partiers and are more about being goofy with eachother, so removing an expesive middle man and just letting them goof around seemed like a no brainer. I know a lot of people with say "ohh you NEED a dj" from being at one huge wedding where someones nephew was recruited to shuffle through songs and they did a bad job, we've all seen that, but small weddings don't need a dj in the same way.

I’ll have about 50 people including bridal party but I want the fun party/dance atmosphere so I’m hiring a dj. I feel like it sets the mood.
