Small Wedding in Big Sanctuary

Amanda, on January 6, 2021 at 4:50 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 5
Our wedding date is March 6, 2021 and we’ve decided not to postpone. We’re only inviting immediate family and wedding party so max 20-25 people (probably even less).

Our ceremony is in a big sanctuary which normally seats about 500. My fiancé still really wants me to walk down the aisle to organ music (and I want to do that for him because he’s wonderful and has been selfless through this entire process) and I’m worried the first thought that comes to my mind will be “wow this place is empty!” Any ideas on how we can make a big sanctuary look not so empty with only a few people?

There really isn't any way to do that without removing pews, etc. Just try to focus on the people who are there for you.

I would let it go. There's no way you can do that.

Sounds really beautiful 🌹 Ideas would be having your guests sit on the end of the pews and it is a wild thought, but you could do trees like Kate Middleton did to fill the pews. I love that your guests will have a clear view of you instead of being in a crowd and not seeing.

You can't really. We had a small guest list with a CAVERNOUS sanctuary area. I'm not sure if you have a modern space or more traditional but there are a few things we did to make it look "full." Although, honestly, my sanctuary space is not aesthetically pleasing even with larger weddings and all of the weddings I've seen in it the added décor always looked tacky. So for that, and budget reasons, we opted for no décor and just lighting.

-Have your ushers sit everyone to the front and in the middle. Utilize only a few pews.

-Have your photographer take pictures from no more than 2 rows behind your guests and focus tightly on the center. Only one of our pictures wasn't taken this way. It turned out really cool so I like it but you can tell we didn't have any guests really lol. There's nothing you can really do about your march down the aisle though except ask the photographer to do close up shots instead of far away shots.

-If you can light only the space you're using. We were able to light just the middle front area instead of the entire sanctuary. It made it feel very intimate.

Same here!! I am also getting on March 6 and my venue fits 150 people and we will have 10. Interested to see what you might figure out, because I feel the exact same way!!

The tip to ask the photographers to adjust their shots is very helpful. It makes the photos look so intimate.
