Small wedding and Dancing???

Georgia, on January 16, 2023 at 2:02 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 3

We are having a "smaller" wedding, 50 people. I love to dance at weddings but I know with such a small group it's unlikely that will happen at ours. The band we hired isn't a dance band they are more of a lounge band. However, even if there is no dancing I want to really create an environment so people stay and mingle and enjoy the night and don't just leave after dinner. I'm struggling with our planner about the layout. Currently we have a stage where on one side of the patio and a bar on the other. In layout 1 we have a small open space in front of the stage to serve as a dance floor with lounge furniture on each side. On the other side of the patio, is a bar and tables. I'm debating on moving the lounge furniture to the side with the bar and the tables to the side with the stage. This means the open space will be in front of the bar instead of the stage. My thoughts are if no one dances and everyone just hangs out it might be nice to have the lounge and open space in front of the bar. But if people do dance or we do a first dance it would have to be in this space, Would it be weird if the available dance area is in front of the bar area and not the stage?

I ended up having a smaller wedding (around 60 people), and people still danced! I think it totally depends on your crowd and the music. As far as the room layout, one thing to consider is if the line for the bar will pass through the lounge area if it's in front of the bar? That may interfere with people dancing or people trying to socialize.

I think I would actually be more inclined to sit near the band and watch them while talking with friends/family, so I would leave the lounge furniture where it is.

My best friend's wedding was similar, with a live band that wasn't necessarily "dance" music. She had an outdoor venue with a fire pit where a lot of us hung out, but I'd say the majority of guests stayed by the bar/band and mingled most of the night.

In fact, when the band would take breaks, she hooked up a computer to the sound system and played maybe 3-4 "dance" songs at a time and people who needed their dance bug out got to dance, but many people continued mingling during the "dance breaks" anyway.
