Small traditional cake AND sheet cake?

Casey, on November 7, 2017 at 8:50 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

My FH has celiac, and needs gluten free cake. Gluten free cakes are usually more expensive than regular cakes (the flours cost a lot more), and we're having about 150 guests.

Would it be reasonable to have a smaller traditional wedding cake that's gluten free that we could do our cake cutting with and that he could actually eat, plus a sheet cake in the kitchen that we could serve our guests? I feel like I've heard of this before, but has anyone here actually done it? How did it go?

ETA: I guess another option would be to find a baker that does both gluten free and cupcakes, and offer our guests cupcakes?

I think this is reasonable, especially so your guests can have regular cake versus gluten free. We're doing a small cake for cutting purposes and 2 kitchen cakes out back to help save with the cost.

We are thinking of doing a smaller wedding cake to cut and then sheet cake for everyone to eat. It's quicker because the sheet cake can already be cut and ready to serve after we cut our cake. It's cheaper too, but everyone will still be getting cake. I think your situation sounds fine.

You can do either. Or just make the top tier gluten free.

When my friend and her husband (who has celiac) got married they had a traditional cake and then a smaller gluten free groom's cake so that he could also have cake.

We're doing a small cake for us and sheet cake for our guests. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion.

Could you do some gluten free cupcakes? we did a small cutting cake and a ton of cupcakes and minis for guests. not as cheap as sheet cake but more affordable. most cupcake bakeries can do g-free cupcakes no problem.

ETA just saw your ETA re cupcakes Smiley smile

I think this totally reasonable, especially in your case! The top tier idea is a nice one too so long as potential cross contamination is an issue.

Yeah, cross contamination has gotten him sick before, and the last thing I want is a sick husband on our wedding night and when we're traveling to our honeymoon.

Potentially unpopular opinion here, but I don't really like the way cupcakes look at a wedding? It just feels a little too cutesy.

Plus he wants to be able to eat our wedding cake. Even if we have GF cupcakes. Even if he has a GF groom's cake. He just wants to be able to eat our wedding cake. Which I think is a pretty reasonable request.

None of us have allergies and we're doing a small two-tier cake with sheet cake in the back for serving to our 200 guests. It was just more cost efficient that way. Our reception is outdoors with a relaxed mood so I'm not worried about it looking cheap, either. As long as it tastes good Smiley smile

Just for price reasons we are doing a small 3 tier cake and then adding 6 sheet cakes. It came out way cheaper. Plus every piece from the sheets will have a flower on it

FH's cousin has celiac, and since he's the only one with this particular condition, our caterer is preparing him a special meal, with his own dessert, so he can also enjoy, but this will be served to him only

I'm gluten free, and we did a tier cake and a sheet cake! We had several guests that require gluten free, and when we taste-tested my FH loved the gluten-free so much (and honestly couldn't tell the difference) that we actually made everything GF. Surprisingly our baker didn't charge more for gluten-free, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. We were able to offer three different flavors between our tier cake and our sheet cake.

We are also doing a small princess cake to cut and a larger sheet cake for guests (to save on cost). I think it's a great solution!

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea. We just had a few GF guests attend and neither of us are GF, so we had our tiered wedding cake, and had a couple GF cupcakes served to each GF guest. They kept thanking us for thinking to provide them with dessert.

Your FH's request to be able to eat the actual wedding cake he's cutting into is definitely reasonable. I think having a GF cutting cake and normal cake that can be served as slices or cupcakes or whatever makes a ton of sense.
