Small Bust Alterations Advice - i Don't Want Curves

ak2019, on October 7, 2018 at 11:35 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 15

I've been searching through the forums for posts about other brides with small busts, but most of the advice seems to be sewing in cups, push-up bras, chicken cutlets, etc. I want to adjust the dress to fit my small bust, not adjust my small bust to fit the dress. I don't want to look like I suddenly have a huge chest, when everyone who knows me knows that isn't true.

I have seen a couple of comments scattered about from brides with a similar mindset who said their seamstress altered the top to get rid of the extra space in the chest and fit it to their bodies. I'm hoping to use this post to confirm that this is, in fact, a thing that is done?

I'm worried about going into my fitting and having the seamstress just suggest extra padding and ignore what I want. I had a friend who had a breast reduction surgery and was very self-conscious about looking like she had huge boobs, and that is exactly what happened with her. When she was dress shopping, they said they could adjust the bust, so she ordered her gown, and their idea of adjusting the bust was putting huge cups in. Her dress was highly beaded, so that may be why they couldn't reconstruct the top. My dress is plain satin, so I'm hoping it will be possible?

For reference: I wear an A-cup when I actually wear a bra - which is pretty much never. My bust measurement was 31. I ordered Allure 3065 in a size 6, which has a bust measurement of 34. I don't mind a thin cup for nipple-hiding purposes, but that is all I'm really wanting. The photo included below isn't my dress, but it's got a fit similar to what I'd be hoping for, minus the pointy nipples, which I assume is actually being caused by boning.

So is this possible? Or am I just going to have to make peace with the fact that I'm going to have fake boobs on my wedding day?

You haven’t been to your appointment yet and you’re already thinking the worst. Tell your seamstress exactly what you said to us.

No reason they can’t alter the dress to fit you. Just talk to your seamstress, their job is to satisfy you.

That's good to know! I know I am preparing for the worst - I just want to know that this is an option before I go into my alterations appointment demanding the moon and stars. Some people said their seamstress advised against it, but I'm hoping to hear some more experiences. Either the reason why they couldn't do it, or success stories of it being done. Thanks!

I was able to have my seamstress take in the bust by a lot. I also ordered a size 6. I am wearing a normal strapless bra and everything is snug enough so the dress won't fall down even with a small bust.

I see no reason why they shouldnt be able to fit the dress to your bust size. As a fellow A cup bride, they adjusted mine to my bust size (I am going a more padded route, for my own personal reasons). Maybe wear a bra you feel comfortable with on the day of so they can fit it to that, or bring your own bra liners so you can tell them the thickness/padding level you want, if they suggest that route. Good luck & happy planning ❤

Hi ak2019! Agreeing with the others, talking to your alterations specialist will help. They are professionals and should be able to alter the dress to fit you and your body.

I agree, it's difficult, as most of the advice is for to make your bust size bigger, but I also want to look like myself on my wedding day in every way. Smiley heart

You should have options here and we don't want you to be stressed. When is your first fitting appointment?

Lastly, congrats on finding your gorgeous Allure dress, it's GORGEOUS, by the way!

My seamstress took the bust in on my dress no problem. I also was having pointy boob issues from the boning so she removed the boning that was causing the problem. She said “boning is great if it works” as she literally ripped it out of my dress haha.

If your dress is just plain satin, it should not be hard for the seamstress to make the dress fit you the way you want. Good luck!

I'm going to be getting my dress likely next month. I'm not sure when the first appointment will be - I haven't gotten far enough in my planning timeline to know when I should be setting all that up. I know I got my dress a couple of months earlier than I needed to, so I don't think I'll be jumping immediately into fittings. But I'm not sure yet Smiley smile

That's great! Congrats on finding "the dress"! Smiley heart Makes perfect sense and I'm sure your alterations specialist will have an idea of a fitting/alteration timeline for you, too, given the alterations you want to have done by your wedding day. Smiley smile

Are you me??? I've been searching all over the internet with the same issue. All the advice has been for people wanting to fill out their dress/insecure about having small boobs while I'm over here like I LIKE MY SMALL BOOBS, I DON'T WANT TO HAVE MORE PADDING THAN BOOB...

I ordered the same size of dress that I tried on in the store. It fit my waist perfectly, but I was swimming in the boob area. My dress has boning, so I guess my options are going mucho padded (which looks so ridiculous on my small upper body frame) or removing the boning? I don't know. I'll be interested to hear how it goes!

Well I'm basically in the same boat! The top of my dress has boning in it. I have a consultation with a seamstress in about two weeks! Because I want to shop around if one tells me it can't be done. I will let you know what she says!

Hi! I wanted to give an update after my alterations appointment, in case it helps anyone down the road!

The seamstress I talked to was amazing. She said she would take in the side seams of the dress to make it fit my torso. She would then remove fabric from the princess seams, which would take a lot of extra off the bust, as well. She said we will initially plan to keep the boning and see how it fits with those alterations before deciding if we want the boning to go. So it IS an option to remove the boning, if it came to that.

She did mention that some alterations places can't do certain things. Idk if it's true or not, but she said that David's Bridal isn't allowed to trim/remove the boning from their dresses, for example. So it might come down to who you work with.
