Slideshow at reception: yes or no?

Adrienne, on September 13, 2022 at 9:39 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
Hello everyone! My fiancee and I are about six weeks out from our wedding at a cool old factory in New Jersey. I wondered if anyone has ever seen or done a continuous slideshow at the reception, specifically of the social media pics guests are taking at the wedding. (Guests hashtag or upload their candids to an online box and they are played on a loop at the event)
Anyone do it? My fiancee wants to ensure that we get candids from people because if they see them playing, they’ll want to take more. I understand where he’s coming from but I worry it’ll be tacky and no one will be paying attention to us.

Did it run throughout the reception? Was it right in the middle of everything or off to the side of something? I appreciate your input!

It ran throughout the reception. There was a big screen at the front of the room where it played.

For our wedding, we had a continuous slide show playing on a computer that was set up by the one door. It was of photos of my husband and I growing up.

The guest-generate slideshow could have a prominent position. If they are well-behaved, this could let guests share silent greetings to the newlyweds. It could be even nicer if this included short video clips and could have images of the engagement and earlier life.

I think the big question here would be - do you trust all your guests to be aware of what might or might not be appropriate for the 'audience'?

I know that my husband's friends have a tendency to take things too far after a few drinks - I haven't even sent them the link to our google photos album (where we are having everyone upload photos they took!) for fear that they could upload something that might offend my grandad, mother in law, great aunt etc lol.

I don't think its tacky at all but you might find that some people find it distracting. At my work we run photo slideshows for various events people have with us and I find that people spend a lot of time looking at/talking about the photos rather than participating in the event going on around them.

If you want to encourage people to take photos there are loads of ways you can do this - we told all our friends ahead of time (just via group chats lol!) and we also asked our celebrant to let people know that we were happy for everybody to take photos throughout the day and to share them online. We also discussed with our guests as we bumped into them that we would create a place they could share pics to and that we would be happy to share our professional group photos there too when the time comes.

Another thing that can work very well is having cameras at your reception. Polariods or just disposable ones, if you leave a few around people will definitely take photos!

I had figured it would be good (or necessary) to have someone editing which pictures were displayed. But this would be either another hired hand or a guest who likes to do stuff like editing of picture shows.
