Sky Lantern Unity Ceremony

Kmess, on July 16, 2015 at 2:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

My fiance and I were thinking of doing a unity ceremony where we both light and release a single sky lantern (biodegradable of course) with our wedding vows written on it. The ceremony will be outdoors in an open area (next to a lake). I'm just wondering though if it might look stupid to just release one and if it's too early in the night and the effect won't be good. We'd probably release it around 5:30 pm and sunset is 6:30pm. Also, any suggestions on timing of when during the ceremony to do this or good things to say to accompany it?

I'd advise against this. A) those things are a bitch to light and get to take off. B) they aren't legal in every state/city and C) they are responsible for quite a few wildfires every year.

Fire hazard...and there was a big thing about how horses were getting burned really bad from them. I don't recommend them... they are pretty but dangerous.

Gah, I just looked it up and they're illegal in NJ anyway. That's a shame. I figured 1 wouldn't be so bad, especially if we tethered it. But I guess that's a no go, c'est la vie.

Just make sure you are allowed to them. We did one on the fourth together since we couldn't do it on our actual wedding day. So if you can, and its not too windy, i say go for it! I love lanterns and think it would be so awesome and make for some great pictures.
