Skirt Alterations Question

Erica, on October 27, 2019 at 11:48 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
Hi!

So I brought home my sample dress recently and couldn't resist trying it on today while my FH had to go in to work haha. I remember it being heavy on the bottom but it's even more cumbersome than I remember! My wedding is in July and the plan is to do an outdoor ceremony. Also I love to dance and I'm realizing how impractical this dress probably is. Even with a bustle it will be super heavy.

There are two layers of that stiff material (is it hosehair?) under the skirt and that's what makes it soo heavy. It's to poof the bottom out a bit which I'm actually not a huge fan of anyhow, I prefer a more flowy look. The skirt needs to be hemmed anyway, so my question is, do you think I could remove these two poof layers without compromising the integrity of the dress? I know I need to get a professional opinion from a seamstress but my wedding is a ways off so not planning on alterations for a while. Just wondering if anyone has done something similar? Thanks in advance!

My guess would be yes. I was adamantly anti-poof so anytime I’d try one on and say “too poofy!!” the consultant would inspect the layers and point out the crinoline one that was causing the problem and say it could easily be removed. Of course, all dresses are different, so I can’t make any promises not knowing the structure of yours.

This is the dress. Looks a lot poofier in the stock photo.

Now, I'm no seamstress, so I don't know, however, my dress has the same tulle material I think you're speaking of and my stylist told me they could take off any amount of layers that I wanted to, to make it the shape that I wanted. (More poofy, less poofy)

For my dress in particular, 2 layers was what they recommended to make it less poofy, but still hold it's general structure of being A Line.

Hope my experience kind of helps - Ultimately a professional will help the most, but there's a lot that can be done so don't be discouraged. Smiley smile
