Sitting or Standing Spin off

Candyapple, on April 27, 2013 at 7:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

My FMIL has asked if the guests could stay seated while I walk down the isle, said that she had never seen such a thing until she moved from IN. She is the sweetest, I'm just curious if anyone has been to a wedding where they never stood for the bride or if anyone is thinking about doing it? I'm probably one of the most non traditional brides, just a go with whatever attitude. It sparked my curiosity because I can see her point.

I've never been to a wedding where we didn't stand for the bride's entrance. How is she going to stop the guests? I think it will be natural for them to rise.

That's exactly what I thought too. I'm sure an announcement could be made from the officiant/DJ/someone, but that is kind of a tradition that I can't see changing. I think guests would be really confused. See said it makes it easier for everyone to see me walk down the isle, true, but I'm not sold on it.

I just think it would be super confusing... even if an announcement was made.

All I can imagine is half the people standing, getting confused and then others standing and then half sitting back down and then no one paying any attention to you.

Maybe I'm wrong but I just think it's to drilled into peoples minds.

I think this would be a bit tough to do. I don't think everyone would listen to the announcement, and I like it when they stand. Personal preference I guess.

It's interesting--people don't customarily stand at a Jewish wedding when the bride enters. And I have to admit, I find the custom of standing for the bride a bit bewildering. It makes it harder for people in the congregation to see the bride. And since they are not also standing when the groom enters, it seems like just one more way in which the wedding ceremony is made to be all about the bride--as if there weren't two people getting married.

It's so weird...why on earth does she prefer this? What is it to her?

I was at a wedding once where the guests stood up and then never sat back down. It was annoying! No one could even see/hear the ceremony!

Personally I don't want people standing when I walk in...too much stress and attention...but that decision is left to my FMIL and my mom and my FH...

She makes a valid point about ones seated in the back not being able to see. I like the idea, I just fear there would be lots of confusion. I agree with all here, on both sides. That's why I want opinions & suggestions. I didn't realize the Jewish don't recognize the traditional brides entrance with standing, interesting.

Hahahaha I felt the same way with a Captains table from a post earlier in the week (which I am now doing I have to say), Your welcome Tracey lol

You're probably right Celia, I'd say it's very difficult to change a tradition so widely used.
