Single friends plus one

Lexi, on March 4, 2019 at 6:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Would it be "not proper" to only give plus one's to single friends & not the remaining of the guest list (cousins/family friends etc.)? We have about 6 single friends (1 is female, 5 are male) and we're debating to give them plus one's so they're not alone.

We are already inviting our guest's partner if they're married/engaged/dating. The wedding party is getting a plus one & if you're traveling from a far you get one. But our single friends we're uncertain, especially since they're is only one single female. If we give a plus one to everyone on our guest list it'll be about an additional 30 people. If we give it to our friends it'll be 6. The family friends/cousins/grandparents are either divorced, widowed are just aren't seeing anyone & the youngest single cousin is 42, youngest family friend is 54.

Please no rude comments, just looking for advice on this topic. Thanks!

As long as you’re talking about true plus ones (aka for your single guests, not those with SOs) then I don’t think this is a problem. Plus ones are completely optional.

I think that's a perfectly acceptable way to approach the plus ones! Family has each other to hang with whereas single guests are kind of alone.

Yup! We are already inviting SO's of guests. I just don't know if it's rude to give those single friend's a plus one, but not my single cousin/family friends or grandparents.

That's totally fine. Your family members will have other people to socialize with, your single friends might not.

I think what you are proposing is fine. Regarding the family/cousins/grandparents who are single, they will most likely know other guests, so giving them a plus one isn't as critical. But for truly "single" friends, it's a nice gesture to allow them to bring a date or whatever, so they have someone to hang out with.

I agree with what most others are saying. My single cousins (even those in their 20s) are not getting a plus one. I know they will have plenty of people to talk to. If they have a steady significant other, I've invited them.

The rule we followed is plus ones to any single person that didn’t have a *someone* there. What you’re talking about sounds totally acceptable.

I don't have any single cousins attending, but I am giving a plus one to all of my friends who do not have an SO currently. It's not a huge number, but I feel it's important to help people feel comfortable by giving them someone to bring to the wedding. Sure, they may know other people, but it is different than having a "partner" there which could really be anyone in their life who could be a date or just a friend.
