Silly Traveling with Rings Question

Kari, on February 26, 2020 at 10:22 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 8

I'm not a big jewelry person so have never actually flown with jewelry before. We're going to Florida for a long weekend with some friends and it will be my first time on a plane since getting engaged.

I'm assuming I won't need to remove my e-ring to go through airport security because I know a handful of people whom I'm pretty sure have their wedding bands stuck on their fingers that travel. Is there ever a situation where you would be asked to remove your ring? What is the best recommendation for keeping it safe if you do have to remove it? I've traveled with more expensive items but this is probably the smallest and most sentimental to me so I want to keep it safe. We are staying at a friend's condo so I'm not at all worried about having to leave it in a hotel or anything if we go to the beach or on adventures.

When FH and I came home from Ireland (we got engaged there so I didn't have my ring on when we flew over) I forgot to take it off going through security. It wasn't an issue, however it did slow things down a bit because I had to go wait in line to stand in the full body scanner since I obviously set the metal detector off. Mind you this was at Heathrow, so it may be less of an issue at a domestic airport.

Thanks all. I think I will just wear it and not worry about removing it unless asked. I usually keep my ring box with me so I have a safe place to put it if I need to remove it. If I get asked to take it off all those people behind me in line can wait the 5 seconds it will take for me to put it away safely (I always have shoes off, jackets off, electronics out and ready to go so I'm NOT one of those people who hold up the line).

You should not have to remove your wedding or engagement ring. I have always been recommended to put all your jewelry on the same hand for airport security because of how the machine works, but this could be a old wives tale. If you do set the alarm off and don't want to take your e-ring off, you can ask them to do a hand scan or pat down.

As one who works in the travel industry and travels weekly, I have never had my e-ring or any precious metal set off the metal detectors.

If you feel you have to take it off, put it in a ring case and secure it in your handbag so it's easily accessible.
