Silk Flowers.. Yes or no?

Kristyn, on April 5, 2015 at 8:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

I have been debating real vs. silk flowers and I am leaning more toward silk but am unsure if they will look like fresh flowers. I feel like with silk flowers I will already have them before the big day (one less thing to worry about!) and I won't have to worry about them wilting in the heat. Any opinions or personal experiences with silk flowers??

Silk flowers are gorgeous, but I couldn't sacrifice the smell of fresh. Just watch out though, depending on what you want, it may be just as expensive as real flowers.

Okay - this is my own, sometimes unpopular opinion. Silk flowers always look cheap. They just do. Do yourself a favor and do a centerpiece or bouquet mockup both in real and then in silk flowers. It doesn't have to be anything professional, just something simple. It'll cost you $40 MAX. Use the same flowers. When you're done, ask yourself the same question? Silk flowers? or Real? I'm pretty sure you'll want the real ones. Just a thought.

We were going to go with silk flowers as well. However, like MJBride, I did not want to sacrifice the smell of fresh flowers.

I'm using silk. Great price and beautiful. They look so close to real and they can be ready prior.

It's really a personal preference. I decided on fake because I'm not willing to pay a ton of money for something that's going to die. I also think flowers should grow free and die on their own rather than be cut and die early. Either way, it can get costly.

Mine were all silk also. DH and his son both have allergies pretty bad and I was like Veronica in that I did not want to spend a fortune on something that will die. Plus I can keep my flowers forever. Smiley smile It just depends on how you arrange them and including enough greenery and bling things.

I am doing silk as well. Quality varies, and higher quality that looks very realistic will cost you just as much (and in some cases, more) than real flowers. It's best to shop around and look at your options before you commit. The plus side of me doing the silk flowers is I get them 3 weeks before the wedding, so if there are any problems, there is plenty of time to change it. And it will forever be the way it was on my wedding day...assuming I don't smoosh it.

I will probably be doing silk flowers for a few reasons: I really don't want many large flower arrangements because they are very appealing to me, I don't want to spend lots of money, and with silk flowers you decor can be done ahead of time, which is good for me because I tend to struggle with control. Another reason is, no one will remember the flowers unless you have some grand flower decor. I attached some of my DIY centerpieces which is still a work in progress. I used silk flowers. Tell me what your think.

There are absolutely silk flowers that look cheap --plenty of them (and tons of them are on Etsy). I can spot a Dollar Store, Walmart, cheap import, or low end craft store stem from a mile away. I don't like them and I would never use them. I would do non-floral decor before I went that route. That being said, there are silks that you do need to touch to see if they're real. The problem is that they can get expensive -- far more expensive than going the Sam's Club route and ordering live stems.

Agreed with Centerpiece. We were considering going the silk flower route, but the ones we looked at that actually felt and looked real were pretty pricey. So we are opting for bulk flowers from Costco instead.

You're all spending plenty of money on things that won't last; food, wine, music. Silk flowers, I'm sorry, always look like fake flowers. Real Touch look pretty, but as Centerpiece says, they are pricey.

If your main concern is looking real and the ability to do the flowers ahead of time, go with Real Touch, but it probably will not save you money.

To me, there is nothing like the look and smell of fresh flowers.

I'm doing real touch. They are costing as much as real, and the roses are actually .70 more a stem than real right now. But, I'm using them because of severe allergies that I, my daughter, and 2 BMs have, and I wasn't willing to sacrifice the look of flowers at my wedding. If you're going to use fake, get high quality. If you go to Dollar Tree, Walmart, or even Michaels, they are going to look fake.

I've been trying to decide this too. My plan was to do my own, real flowers from a grocery store or farm market, but the liklihood that this would all go as planned the day of is slim. If you have a hobby lobby near you, or you can order them online they have real touch rose boutonnieres that when 50% are only $1.50. You could always do those for your men and then get real ones for yourself and your bridesmaids then do a non-floral centerpiece. Just spitballing ideas I had for myself on to you Smiley smile Here is the link to the Hobby Lobby boutonnieres. I felt them, their resemblance to the real thing is uncanny Looks like they're on sale this week!! $1.49. They have a good variety of colors to choose from http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/blush-pink-rose-boutonniere-313080/
