Silent Disco Party

Courtney, on October 14, 2020 at 11:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
Hello all! I had incredible help from you with my previous post so I wanted to ask another question. We decided we are going to have a much smaller wedding. We are renting a house from VRBO for two nights and eloping in the backyard with the outside on the patio. With that being said, we can’t have any music due to a noise ordnance. We had already paid for our DJ and they are trying to work something out with us. They suggested maybe doing a silent disco party. Has anyone been to a silent disco party? Are they fun? Pros and cons? I’m just so unsure.

Can the DJ create something for the guests to have the music connected to airpods? Like, maybe there is a way to put it on a channel and everyone who wants to dance put on airpods? Or is my idea still too futuristic? 🤪

I went to a silent disco once. The resort we went to for our honeymoon had one. It was kinda cool but also kind of weird. We all got wireless headphones which had 3 separate channels with 3 separate types of music. It was kind of weird because people were dancing to different beats, but it was fun overall.

That is not what I had envisioned at all. LOL Here I was picturing a bunch of disco balls spinning, lots of laser lighting flashing off the disco balls, and people dancing to their own imaginary music. Your way sounds much better!

Silent discos can be a lot of fun, but I’ve also only been in essentially a club - complete with strobe lights. Everyone wears headphones and can all hear the same music, but the room itself is silent. It was fun because everyone was dancing like a normal night club, but you can control your own music volume.
That said, I think the DJ needs to be a better quality than for a normal wedding bc you can’t just listen to full Tswift songs and the music genre is usually in the EDM or remix pop genres (think something everyone can clearly identify the beat). If you don’t have a dance floor type of space, ideally dimly lit, it could also be weird.
If I were you, I would ask if the DJ does these regularly or has ever done a wedding and how they handle the headphones (even if supposedly sanitized, right now people may be weary of putting items on their heads). That said, depending on your crowd it could be really fun and memorable!

I’ve been to a backyard wedding that turned silent disco at the *end* of the night because of noise, but that was only after the bulk of the party — so almost was like an on site after party instead of shutting it down completely. It was fun for us , the young friends crowd who wanted to dance after drinking all day, but most of the relatives and older guests didn’t stick around for it.

The problem I see for a whole wedding to be set up this way is that any given wedding tends to have 2 crowds— the dancing crowd and the mingling crowd. And, you can’t mingle with headphones in! So the question is how does it work for anyone who doesn’t want to dance? They chat in silence and watch people dance to nothing ? Hah. Might feel kinda weird. I’d also worry about people missing announcements or key moments if they didn’t have headphones on the whole time.

Do you have details of the noise ordinance ? Some are time related, some are decibel related.I had a backyard wedding and just needed to stop amplified noise for 10pm. So, we shifted our whole schedule early to accommodate that. But, determine what amplified noise is and what counts and it it’s possible to apply for any sort of exemption for an event — it’s possible it would just require a permit. ....id definitely reach out to the town to figure out options before going to silent disco.
