Signing marriage license during ceremony

MrsGtoBe, on October 14, 2017 at 9:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Has anyone signed their marriage license during their ceremony? My FH and I are going to be taking communion during our ceremony and I was thinking about signing the marriage license during that time as well. Has anyone done something like this or are planning to?

Yep. It’s the done thing in Australia. The signing takes place during the ceremony.

A lot of people do unity ceremonies that make no sense to me. The signing of the marriage license sounds nice to me though and it's an idea I've thought of and been unsure about.

Though I'm not sure how it'd work with the whole taking communion thing. They offered communion at the last wedding I went to and it just confused me. I was raised irreligious and I just looked at my non-practicing Catholic FH like a deer in headlights. It didn't seem like it would be an appropriate time but I don't know if it works differently in your denomination or what. The pastor they used said in their denomination you have to offer it to everyone when you offer it to anyone and the bride and groom were the ones holding the wine and bread.

I've seen it done at a wedding. I've also seen the bride and groom take communion as the first thing they do as husband and wife (FH and I are considering it). I haven't seen both done, though. I don't think it would be weird to do both as long as you have the time for it.

I have seen it signed at small weddings before.

@Kristin no we are Christians so not a strict ceremony.

@Nora I've also been to many weddings that have done communion too. We are planning to make it a relatively quick part of our ceremony.

Our venue isn't a church so it's different. We go to a separate area right after we leave the ceremony for a min of privacy and to sign. My mom did hers during the ceremony.

I like this idea. So how does it work? You say I Do, kiss, sign the paper, walk the aisle? Do you squeeze it in somewhere else?

Your church may have you sign it the day before right after rehearsal. That's what they did at my cousins wedding.

*I also don't know when you do unity ceremonies so it's foreign to me

Our officiant made the witness signing part of the ceremony. It came after the ring exchange. We had the dj play Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder during that time.

We signed it when we got the license. Then, the minister signed after the ceremony and returned it. (Maryland)

Thanks T Marie! That seems like a good time to do it. Flows better than what I was thinking. I want to do this

In Turkey, where I used to live (and was once engaged), the signing of the marriage license *is* the ceremony.

In my church, like a PP mentioned, we sign it the night before at the rehearsal.

We had to sign when we applied for it. We weren't allowed to have the license unless we signed
