Signing marriage license at ceremony

Alessia, on January 2, 2024 at 2:22 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 5
We would like to sign the license at the ceremony. Where should we fit it in and suggestions on how to display / set up the table? Should we get a fancy booklet to put the license in? Help. Wedding in 10days.

We had the license on a pretty table at the beginning of the aisle, so when we walked back up the aisle after the ceremony we could sign it right then.

That sound like a great idea. Did your officiant/notary follow you back up to sign as well? Did you keep it out on the table or did you put it in something?

We quite frankly forgot to sign until towards the end of the reception because there was so much going on. Luckily, our officiant was also my husband’s uncle, so he also attended the reception. After we signed, he put it back in the envelope it was in, as he had to send it to the county to be filed. If you have it out to display, I would recommend putting it away in a safe (but not forgettable) place immediately after, as it still needs to be turned into the county clerk’s office to be official.

We had it in a plastic folder/protector to make sure it didn’t get damaged or blow away (since we got married outside). Our photographer took pics of us signing it, then we gave it to the officiant since she was in charge of filing it

This depends on what local laws are. Outside of the US, signing the marriage certificate is part of the ceremony. You don’t sign the license because that is what gives the officiant legal permission to perform the ceremony. In the US, many do not sign the certificate as part of the ceremony, and will direct you to other vendors when you ask, because it is considered fraudulent (you are not officially/legally married yet) and the officiant can lose their license to ever perform another ceremony again if they do allow it.
