Shuttle bus for hotel guests

MrsSansom, on May 16, 2018 at 5:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
We have roughly 30 out of town guests coming for the wedding and most of them have already booked rental cars from the airport to the hotel and so they can drive around town. My mom just told me (not asked) we need to get a shuttle bus to get everyone back and forth from the hotel to the venue. I see two problems: 1) Not everyone is at the same hotel so that means we would need two busses, right? And 2) this would encourage everyone to get drunk with the open bar. If they had to drive back to the hotel, there would be less people drinking and driving. I am probably paying for the shuttle if we were to be getting it, so I am leaning towards not having one. However my mom would go behind my back and get one anyways if I told her no. Any clue what to do??

Provide the shuttle. It can make 2 stops.

Agreed, just make sure everyone knows what time the shuttle is leaving from each location (each hotel) so they can plan ahead and be ready on time.

I get your point about the open bar, but I think providing a shuttle will reduce the risk of drinking and driving more than leaving people to police themselves. (I'd be surprised if people weren't already planning to catch a Lyft or Uber anyways).

Thank you for this advice with reasoning. Uber and Lyft aren’t really used much in my town, but it’s not impossible to get one. I will have to look into a shuttle company and ask them some questions.

You can also look into school bus rental as a shuttle. Friends of ours did this and they said the cost was very reasonable.

If you’re already paying for open bar what’s the problem if they get drunk? It’s par for the course with shuttles or without, free booze is the best booze. Have good bartenders and it will be fine.

And if you don’t want to pay for it tell her so and let her take care of it if she must have it. In fact just tell her that and move on. It will also be on her to let people know about the shuttle.

So I would say tell her no and here’s why:

    1) she’ll probably end up paying for it herself (win - lose in your situation)
    2) isn’t the point of an open bar for people to get drunk?
    3) drunk guests are a lot more fun than sober (they’ll have better memories.... maybe)
    4) I, personally, would love to have a shuttle/DD for the night, especially if I spent money on a hotel and rental car

I’m having this same exact problem with the same amount of guests. I was told about Uber events and I think I’m going to look into it. The only thing is my wedding is in a very small town also so I don’t know how I would find out if drivers are even available there! All the shuttles quoted me an outrageous # for that amount of people 😒 I’m at a loss

I'm confused. You said that this encourages people to drink and drive and that there would be less people people drinking and driving if they had to drive themselves back to the hotel. But the people from the hotel won't be driving if there is a shuttle? They didn't drive there, what are they going to drive? I vote get the shuttle. They can make multiple stops.

If someone’s going to get tanked at your wedding, they’ll do it with or without a shuttle. They’ll bum a ride, call a cab, or more likely find the Lyfts and Ubers around. And nope don’t need two busses, the bus will just go on a loop between the reception and the hotels until everyone’s back or the amount of time you paid for is up. Shuttles are a very nice thing to do for guests.

Definitely invest in a shuttle, party bus or something to transport your guests to and from. Although you said guests are renting cars, I think it’s always nice to give the guests the option. Most shuttles or party buses will run on a loop to and from locations for as long as you paid for. Some even have split time(your time starts with the 1st pick up, stops during your event and then starts back up when you’re ready to start shuttling guests back to hotels), so you don’t waste any unused hours that you paid for.

Also check with your hotel to see if they have shuttles. The hotels that I have blocks with both have shuttles that will do trips for wayyy cheaper than renting a shuttle through a company that may require a 5 hour minimum.

I'm not doing a shuttle. With my venue and location there is absolutely no way we can force everyone into booking the same hotel and I'm not paying for multiple shuttles to go to different places. Before we even sent save the dates people were already looking at Airbnb. If everyone is too spread out, u wouldn't worry about it. They are adults they can either drive and have a DD or Uber.

We asked our hotel and they are providing a complimentary shuttle with our room block.
