Shower gifts - dealing with returns?

This past weekend was my shower, and I had a very nice time. I am so grateful that people took the time to come and gave us gifts. I have never really had to return gifts like this before, and I feel horrible about it. If I explain it to the store, do you think they would give us a store credit to buy what was on our registry? How do I explain it if the person comes over and we returned the gift? I am an honesty is the best policy kind of person, and it just makes me feel so bad.

I was about to say the same thing. Look up the sku code online. You can always have a garage sale, save a few for a white elephant party or take the sterling grandma stuff to a recycle center. H had some leftover copper scraps from a job last year and we got about 500 dollars.

I had to look up SKUs online after my baby shower. It helped for most of the items.

But places almost always allow for exchanges/store credit without a receipt (with the exception of boutiques). You'll just get it for either the current selling price or the lowest price within the last X number of days. Yes, they'll ask for your ID and scan it into their database to keep track of your return history. You shouldn't have an issue. Not all states allow for cash returns without a receipt.

I am totally good with store credit! I know at Sur La Table I am going to just get the spatulas off our registry. As for Marshalls and Home Goods....I shop there so much it isn't even funny! I should own stock in that company.

One person at my shower gave me about 10 "bride" tchotchkes that I would never use - photo album, zippered bag that says bride, a bride thing you put on your desk that say M.R.S., etc. Almost all the labels were torn off with some remnants left. I know she shops in Marshalls so I brought them to Marshalls. Turned out they were from Marshalls, TV Maxx and Home Goods. Since all those stores are the same company, the saleswoman at Marshalls was able to identify the little pieces of price tag left and told which store each item was from and put them in separate bags for me. I had to got to each store to return stuff but it was worth it since I would never use any of this stuff. All 3 stores were great about the returns and gave me a gift card for the value. I was able to get stuff I really needed.

Walmart takes back anything that will scan into their system, even if it didn't come from there. No receipt needed
