Show Me Your...Non Diamond Engagement Ring

AmandaMarie, on May 16, 2014 at 8:05 PM

I constantly have people telling me how beautiful my ring is but they always give me strange looks when I tell them it's my engagement ring. I think I love mine more because she's not traditional.

I'm on my phone so no pic Smiley sad but I have an aquamarine. It's a long story why, but I love it. I'm not a big diamond kind of gal, there's a special meaning for me...and...it's freaking beautiful.

    Erica -

I adore The Tudors and The Borgias. DH and I are watching The Borgias together. We just finished season 1 and ordered season 2!

    Yay history nerds!

So many aquas! So is mine. I would post a pic, but I only use mobile. Mine is a pear shaped aquamarine solitaire in white gold. We were originally planning on a one carat stone with diamonds on the sides, but ended up ordering the aqua and then having it set, and it's 1.84 carats. It's pretty big, but I guess you get more when you are not paying a premium for diamonds.

I always wanted an aqua, so I'm glad he let me pick it out!

I might have to show this whole thread to my FH. He proposed without a ring (which according to my sister means I'm not technically engaged) because he is waiting until he could afford a "nice" diamond. I told him I don't even particularly care for diamonds, and I would prefer another gemstone like morganite, green amethyst, or aquamarine, but he seems to think that if he doesn't get me a diamond people will look down on it. I can't figure out how to get it through his head that not only do I not care, but I would actually prefer a different stone. Plus then we could use all that money saved on something more important than jewelry...

I have a white sapphire...saved a lot of money not getting a diamond so he was able to get a bigger stone

    Beautiful rings!

@Julie, show him! It took a lot of convincing for me to get FH to be on board with this ring. He's the same way, he tried to get me to switch my amethyst and diamond band around to be opposite. I was so worried that he purchased it with a diamond that when he proposed with my ring, I was so relieved. I had to pull out the big guns with "are you going to be wearing it for the rest of your life? No? Then don't complain"

I'm on my phone so no picture, but mine is a citrine stone (yellow) set in my dad's wedding band. Citrine is my birthstone. I love that it's one if a kind.

I love these rings, ladies. I'm one of the few women I know who actually doesn't like diamonds at all, so it's nice to see other choices. They are unique and beautiful, every one of them.

I really dislike diamonds (I don't find them very pretty, plus they're massively overpriced and the whole "diamonds are for engagement rings" thing was made up by diamond companies trying to figure out how to sell the things...not to mention all the conflict involved in mining them), so I made it clear early on that I didn't want a diamond ring.

When we went ring shopping (we went together and I picked my ring), I had originally been looking at amethyst rings, but would up falling in love with an opal ring we found. It is gorgeous and suits me so well...and also distracts me frequently with its pretty colors.

@amandamarie- yeah that's a good point. You would think a guy wouldn't complain about spending less money on a ring. I have fallen head over heals for green amethyst. I can't stop looking at pics of rings on etsy. This one is especially my favorite (I might casually leave it up on his computer..)

@Julie I think something else that might help persuade your fiance is that the ring should be something you love that symbolizes your commitment to each other ... and it would be really silly to get an expensive diamond that you hate (or just really dislike) just to appease other people. And no one else is going to care as much about your engagement ring as you do, so why please them?

I LOVE all these beautiful rings!! And that non-diamonds are growing in popularity.

Mine is a pink sapphire in black gold. My FH picked it out all by himself. He didn't want to get me a "typical" ring because I'm not a typical girl.

@Megan I toyed with the idea of the black gold, but decided on rose gold when I couldn't find a band that would compliment it. Yours is beautiful, though.

@Julie that ring is so pretty. I think most gemstones look amazing with rose gold.
