Should i use the fire pit area?

Casey, on April 22, 2018 at 4:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 29
Hey all! So my venue is a rustic barn type venue. Next to the stage area (often used for ceremonies) and across from the main reception barn is a fire pit area! It’s super cute, but I’m not sure if we should use it? The wedding is in December in the evening. I was thinking I could do like a hot chocolate bar or something in the area, and it gives just another space for people to hang out especially if they want to take a break from the main reception. But, I’m not sure if it’ll be too cold and it’s a waste of time and money to try to do anything with it. The wedding is in Southern Delaware for geographic reference. Basically, it could be a high of 35, or a high of 65. Most likely it will be in the 40s, and the sun will set around 7:40. I attached a pic, but they have better and cozier seating there now.

Opinions and ideas for the area are welcome!! For the most part, we are having a traditional reception, and we aren’t doing games or anything. Just dinner, a lot of dancing, desserts and an open bar!

I personally am in love with firepits so I say do it! You could get throws/blankets for guests.

I'd say totally! It's super cute and would be another great personal touch to the reception. Especially if you do something with it, like hot cocoa. We arew having ours in the fall and will be using our fire pit for a Smores bar.

Oh good Idea! Between myself and my parents we have TONS of throws and blankets we could roll up and place in a basket. Or just buy fabric to cut and roll up as well.

We could probably also lay out some s’more stuff!
I think I’m a little wary it’ll organically become the smoking spot and steer non-smokers away, but we could always designate another spot for that as well.

We’re definitely looking into hot cocoa if we have it! FH works at a chocolate and fudge shop that sells AMAZING drinking chocolate. It’s sooo good just on its own (literally the best hot chocolate ive ever had) but we’d also put other toppings out for people as well.

Not for everyone, but a smoking area? They're your guests and you want them to be comfortable but it would be a great way to get them away from the rest of the party.

If we decide to not really do anything with it it could be a smoking area, but I know that there’s about 7 smokers total out of the 130 invited. So there is a need, but not a huge need. I think if we do anything with it it’ll probably become a smoking area organically (unless we designate another spot).

I went to a wedding with a similar setup and I was skeptical at first. I didn't want a spark hitting my dress or my hair smelling like smoke. It turned out to be one of the best parts of the night! As the dancing was winding down, it was a great place to relax and hang out. You could have better conversations away from the loud music. Sit in a comfortable chair with a drink. It was really a great touch and everyone loved it.

I had a fire pit on the patio connected to the reception room. We put Adirondack chairs with pillows around it and had blankets for people to take. We also had Smores and a hot chocolate and cider bar. People really enjoyed it. Our wedding was Christmas weekend in Sonoma so it was a bit chilly in the evening but not too bad. We had heat lamps on the patio to add some warmth.

    Super cute!!
I might see if they have heat lamps. I do know it’s getting warmer into December, last year it was 50s mainly, so it might be perfect fire pit weather!

We had an after party at the fire pit on our reception property and it was seriously my most favorite part of the entire wedding. We did s’mores kits as our favors too so you could use them at the fire. We got married in early October though so the only thing is I don’t know how many people will hang out outside in December, even with fire and blankets I’d want to head in after about 10 mins or so.

True! It could definitely be like a come and go as you please thing. I could see myself as a guest wanting to get some fresh air with my SO/friends and then heading it after a few minutes.

My venue had a fire pit area as well and we are using it however our wedding is in October so we will have a couple yard games for people to play! But if it's going to be cold I think it would be a nice little touch to your wedding for people to gather around and warm up!!

I also saw a bunch of very affordable fleece throws online from eBay. I am having a fire pit—I swear, both venues I looked at had fire pits and I think that is one of the main reasons I considered them! Our wedding is in May in NC so I don’t think we’ll need blankets...I hope! We are having s’mores too...part of our package! 😀

I would definitely make use of it, as long as it is sort of "attended", people tend to "play with fire" sometimes.

I was in a wedding that had a similar setup, the couple opened a s'mores bar after dinner and a lot of us hung out there. Go for it!
