Should i supply snacks/appetizers for my guests or not?

Richaelyn, on July 11, 2021 at 8:38 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

If the time between the start of the reception and the start of the grand entrance is 35 minutes, Should I provide snacks/appetizers for my guests? I was thinking about cutting costs by not suppling snacks and just having the DJ encourage guests to grab a drink at the bar, mingle, take pictures at the photo booth and sign the guestbook. I think this will give my guests plenty to do until the grand entrance so they won't be left just waiting around. Below is a part of our timeline:

Ceremony- 7:00-7:30pm

Reception Starts/Bar is open at 7:30pm

Grand Entrance into First Dance- 8:05-8:10pm

Welcome Speech/Blessing over the food- 8:10-8:15pm

Dinner is served- 8:15-9:15pm

What do y'all think?

During the cocktail hour? Yes, you are required to serve some type of substantial food while alcohol is served. Guests drinking on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster and you will be liable for anything happening to them.

8pm is very late to be served dinner.

I agree with the previous poster. Since you plan on serving alcohol, you don't want your cuts drinking on an empty stomach. It is also rather late to first be serving dinner so you might want to give them something to much on to hold them over. I personally wouldn't really want a full meal that late at night.

Your dinner is very late so I would definitely serve hors d'oeuvres between ceremony/reception. Personally, I would eat a meal before your ceremony and then just expect snacks/cocktails/cake after (no meal).

In my group, a 8pm dinner is about the normal time. Also, the guests know what time the wedding starts so they should know to grab a snack beforehand if they need it. U are right about the drinking on a empty stomach, I haven’t thought about that.

I would definitely consider a cocktail hour. Serve some small finger foods such as fruits and cheeses that way your guests are not getting hungry and leaving before the reception starts.

Always serve food when you’re serving alcohol, even just small passed appetizers. But yeah when the bar opens you need snacks.

What kind of snacks do you think we should serve? I want to do something where the food isn’t out in the open/covid friendly. Or maybe I should keep the bar closed then.

What does your caterer offer? Go with a cheese and crackers platter, hummus and pitas, something simple such as egg rolls or skewers for the meat eaters.

If you have the bar closed, then don’t have a gap. Go straight to dinner.

Do you have waitstaff that can walk around with appetizers? Granted you’re in the US and the bulk of your guests are not anti-vaxx then it seems buffets are “safe” again. I’ve never been a big buffet person because I’m a germaphobe BUT I have seen salad bars and all that are back. I’d ask your food vendor what type of options they have. Usually things that are easy to eat/hold with one hand that don’t require utensils.

I have never been to a wedding without appetizers...and having dinner that late is a bit much. I would not have alcohol and no food. Very bad choice....you can do fruit, cheese, crackers, meats, nuts etc.
