Should I resize my Engagement ring?

Melissa, on March 28, 2016 at 10:40 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

When I got in engaged it was during the winter, so when my ring finger got sized it was during the colder months of the year. I know your fingers are smaller in cold weather and get a little bigger in warmer weather. Right now, and for the last few months, my ring has been comfortable. Loose enough that when I wiggle it over my knuckle I can get it off, but tight enough that it doesn't move around or would ever come close to falling off. However, I'm noticing that when I am warmer (warm day outside, after a workout, the heat in the apartment is high, etc) that my ring feels much tighter to the point where if I wanted to take it off I'd have to soap up my finger, and I can't twist it easily on my finger. The jeweler we got the ring from offers a complimentary first time resizing, so I'm trying to figure out if I should have it resized up half a size (from 5 1/2 to a 6). Have any of you experienced this? Any suggestions on what to do?

You'll want to size it up when you add your band. So you may want to wait for now and do them both after the wedding

How long have you been engaged? If it starts to become very uncomfortable all the time, then yes, I would get it resized. It took a good 6ish months for my finger to get used to the ring. At first it spun like crazy, but now it stays 95% of the time. I have to take it off when I go running as my fingers swell, but daily fluctuation isn't an issue anymore.

Yeah, I'd probably wait. As Jessica said, you'll want to resize it when you add your wedding band because they'll fit tighter when they're on there together. If you already have your band (or if it gets unbearably snug), I'd go right away, but otherwise wait until you buy your band.

I would wait to do it with your wedding band and get sized at the jeweler! You might be comfortable doing a 5.75 instead of going up a full half size. That is what happened to me! I thought I would need to go up a full half size but I only needed to go up a quarter.

I would wait until you buy the band and get them resized together.

Also realize, if you just get it enlarged, it may spin and be loose every winter, which can be dangerous. If I were you, I would get it resized with the wedding band, and get sizing beads added. They don't make the band smaller so your flesh isn't constricted, but they do keep it from slipping around and falling off when your finger is smaller. Some people just fluctuate a lot between seasons, with water weight/salt intake, etc. and can't have just 1 ring size. The sizing beads are a good compromise.

@Emily are the sizing beads removable? Can I put them on in the winter and take them off in the summer?

@Mary I've been engaged for about 4 months, so I guess I should definitely give it more time.

@BrideMeg that's a good point. Going up a whole half size may be too much! How did you figure out what the best size was? Did the jeweler just re-size your finger and decide for you?
