should i keep string duo for cocktail hour after ceremony?

natalia, on July 21, 2015 at 11:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hello everyone!! this is my first post, but most likely not my last. to sum things up, i am having an iPod wedding, as i did not want a DJ because we are having an afterparty at a bar/lounge after the reception and that will be the "dancing portion" of the wedding celebration..

i decided that i do need to have a string duo perform the ceremony music since 1) its just more "wedding like" and 2) i dont want to put my DOC in charge of the iPod to play/stop when she is going to have other stuff to take care of. my question is.. do i keep them for the cocktail hour? the wedding is 70 people and ceremony/cocktail hour will be held on the restaurants rooftop. i don't want the violin/cello noise to be too squeaky and somewhat.. annoying while people are trying to mingle. at the same time i feel like string music is a little too serious, and i want the vibe to be more upbeat.

anyone have any advice on what to do or any past experience with the string ens. during the cocktail hour?

I was just at a wedding this past weekend (which was gorgeous and amazing in every way), and they had a string trio for the ceremony, which they also kept for the cocktail hour and it was REALLY nice. They played classical during the ceremony, but for the cocktail hour it was contemporary songs, and they sounded great -- like Jason Mraz "Yours" and that "girlcrush" song that's on a lot right now. You can definitely have them play music that isn't "too serious!"

I say, if it's in the budget, go for it! It can be really pleasant, and definitely doesn't have to be squeaky Smiley smile

We had the keyboardist and sax player, from our band, play during the cocktail hour. I don't know if is something that the talent company always does, or we could have asked to go without it? I know that in my case we should have not done it. We couldn't even hear the music, over 225 guests talking.

I was just at a wedding with a string trio, and they stayed through the cocktail hour. It was actually really nice - I enjoyed it a lot (and I'm not a huge fan of classical - I don't dislike it, but I don't love it either), and they received quite a few compliments throughout the evening.

If you've hired professional musicians, you don't need to worry about "squeaky" string artists. I ADORE talented, string musicians -- as long as they are professional. If I'm attending a wedding with a string duo, trio, or quartet being featured, I'm a happy guest. Wherever they are, in terms of your wedding, your guests will love them. Yes, have them perform at the cocktail hour. It's a classy, lovely addition to a classy, lovely affair.

If it's not too much more to keep them for cocktail hour, I vote to have them play more contemporary music. Live string music on a rooftop sounds amazing!

If it's in your budget then keep them! I think it sets a beautiful romantic vibe to have live string music playing.

We're having a trio perform for our ceremony and also the cocktail hour. Ask your ceremony musicians if they provide amplification. This is something we won't have at the ceremony but will be an option for the cocktail hour in case it gets to loud you can't hear them. We've gone out to listen to them and I think a lot of duos and trios are adding more than the normal classical music to their list. Ours plays a lot of modern music, Journey, even Guns and Roses. It sounds amazing! And welcome!!

We have a 3 piece band that does classical, jazz and current music! If it's in the budget to have them for both, I say for sure have them there!! Be sure to ask if they can learn any particular songs you know you want played, ours charged a small fee per song. They will take into consideration the vibe you want during that section of the wedding, and should give you a "worksheet" to fill out to help you all see eye to eye on what you are going for. Good luck!!! It will be lovely!

Our wedding sounds exactly like what @FutureMrsT described! We have a string trio, they'll be playing during the prelude and ceremony processional, traditional classical music. For the cocktail hour, I've specifically indicated NO classical music and they'll play contemporary music. I can't wait! I think it will make the atmosphere really nice!
