Should i invite my godmother?

Andrea, on August 14, 2018 at 5:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

Hey everyone, so this is the situation. It's a bit long.

My fiance and I are getting married in Fall of 2019. We know that our list is not going to surpass 60 people; we're pretty comfortable with that. A lot of my fiance's family won't be in attendance because my fiance finds them to be bad-minded and very negative. Me on the other hand, my family makes up the bulk of our list. One individual I was not planning on inviting was my absent godmother.

My godmother messaged me on Facebook on the 24th of July asking me what's new. Mind you, I haven't spoken to this woman for 5 years prior to her message. I obviously told her what was new, which was my engagement. She didn't seem really affected by my news. She just asked when the big day was, and I told her. Never invited her. Simply just told her. She said "Well, it seems like you have your life together, and you know what you want. We'll talk another time." And that was that.

Fast forward a couple days. When I told my grandmother I was getting married, she was ecstatic, wanting to tell everyone about my upcoming wedding. I told her not to tell many people, but I knew deep down she wouldn't be able to keep it to herself for very long. She called me a few days after I initially told her about our wedding, with extreme excitement in her voice. "Your godmother is so excited for your wedding. She said she's going to make up for all the years she was never there for you. She told me she is going to make sure your wedding is beautiful!" Honestly.. I didn't know what to think at the time. I said okay grandma, not really taking it all in at the time. So then my grandma insisted I speak with my godmother so we can discuss the plans.

When I finally spoke to my godmother on the PHONE this time, we were on the phone for 45 minutes or so. She did not seem to exude any excitement about my wedding. She was asking a bunch of questions about the wedding, which I found understandable. (Quick thing to note, my godmother is married to my uncle, which is my grandma's brother.) While we were talking on the phone, she asked "How can I help?" So... I took this question with a grain of salt. I told her I don't usually like asking for help, but I did tell her about my venues I've been looking at and what not. But while talking to her, I did get like really strange vibes off of her.. Like she was forced to talk about this.

We ended up ending the conversation with how she was going to talk to her friend in a neighboring city to see if they can help me with a banquet hall. I appreciated it that, and we ended the convo. Well, 2 days later, my fiance and I found our venue we wanted. We went there, met the owners, took pics and videos of the venue, and realized this is we want the reception to be. I messaged my godmother out of courtesy to tell her we found the venue... so she called me back, and asked me a bunch of questions about this venue. She asked a really weird one like "If I help you with the deposit, is it refundable?" I thought that was weird.. like I'm your goddaughter, if I said I found a place, and you genuinely wanted to help, why would you want to know if you could get your money back? She knows how the banquet hall industry works. I told her the deposit is non-refundable. She seemed disappointed. Anyway, She said I sounded really excited... I was like of course I'm excited! She said she will talk to my uncle and see what they can contribute, and how I should send her a video on Facebook of the venue. We then ended the phone convo.

Immediately I sent her the video. She commented saying it's a really nice place, and I said yeah, my fiance and I love it so much. Then she says "Well, I will speak to your uncle and see what we can contribute, IF ANYTHING because it's such short notice."... I thought that was a weird comment as I don't understand how she could have thought it was short notice.... I told her whatever she felt comfortable with helping with, would be much appreciated. (Was that something wrong to say?)

Anyway, my partner and I weren't relying on her or anything so we paid the deposit on the venue. Once again, as a courtesy, I messaged her and told her don't worry about any of the expenses, it's been taken care of... and all she messages back is a thumbs up... once she did that, I got a very weird feeling about this. I all of a sudden don't want her there.

Being caught up with all of the wedding planning, all of the new feelings that came with it, I let this situation get out of control. I do not know what the conversation was that my godmother and grandmother had, but my godmother does not seem genuinely happy for me. She's making my wedding seem more of a business venture. I never was going to invite her, but I didn't want to just come out and say that to my grandma. She and my godmother are very close. It's her sister-in-law, after all. Now, I think that my godmother probably assumes she is coming. I do not want her there. She isn't happy for me. She has NEVER been there for me, ever. I could probably count on my fingers and toes how many times in my entire life I've seen her. Any time I would talk to her, it would be ME reaching out to her. Now, she was trying to hold money over my head. Telling me make sure I have a BACK UP PLAN in case she can't help.. as if she determines whether or not my wedding is going to be successful.. I got caught up, and now I do not want to send her an invite. Am I wrong for feeling this way? Everyone, please be honest, and let me know what you guys really think. I would thoroughly appreciate it.

Your godmother assumes she’s invited because you’ve been sharing every detail of your wedding planning with her and you were considering agreeing to take money from her to pay for the wedding. While you don’t need to invite her, and you’re entitled to feel however you want to feel, by talking to her so much about the wedding, and not being clear with her or your grandmother, you opened up this huge can of worms.

Hi Andrea! I am sorry you are going through this difficult situation. At the end of the day, your wedding plans and all of the details involved are yours and your fiancé(e)'s decision. I don't think you're wrong for feeling this way. Your feelings are your feelings, therefor they are valid. Have you considered having a heart to heart with her about how all of this is making you feel?

I agree with you... so true.. I realize my mistake now. I shouldn't told her anything about my wedding, especially because I wasn't even going to invite her. Technically I did not send out any save the dates of course, since it's too early for that right now.

I do realize my mistake now, but at the same time do, I don't really like how she was acting towards me as well. You know what I mean?

I don't think you should invite her, or that you should feel bad about it. If she's making you feel this miserable just on the phone, I'm sure her presence will be even worse. I would go talk to your grandmother about how you feel and let her know you don't want your godmother there and then thank your godmother for taking an "interest" in helping you, but politely decline, that way there's no more feelings of obligation between you.

Thank you for your words, Maren! I have thought about having a personal conversation to my godmother about it, and I think she knows that how she acted was in poor taste, because my grandmother called me like 4 days ago, asking me if I spoke to my godmother. Obviously my grandma knows I did... or she wouldn't of asked that question off the bat. So my godmother must have reached out to my grandmother about something, but I just don't know what.

My thing is, even if I do have a conversation with her, I still don't want her at my wedding. She has never done anything for me in my whole life.. and yes.. I bought into the fact that my grandma said my godmother is going to make up for lost times... I got caught up in all of that ! Completely my fault, for lack of control over my wedding plans... I am not sure if I want to have a convo with her.

Hey Aja, thank you for your wonderful advice. It would probably be easier to talk to my grandma, rather than my godmother. Since my grandmother would probably be most affected my by godmother's absence. Actually my grandma called me 4 days ago and then ... I don't know but my godmother must have called her about something. My grandma was giving excuses for why my godmother was acting the way she was. She said my godmother is very "simple-minded", comes from a small family, and how I don't know her very well, I didn't get a chance to grow up around her, so I might be misinterpreting her reaction to my wedding conversation. All of that may be true, but my godmother is her own person. I do not want anyone to make me feel the way I am, especially someone who I barely know who was appointed to be my godmother. Sometimes I forget I have a godmother, honestly. Not sure why she was chosen!

If you dont want her there. That is fine. BUT you do have to talk to her and let that be known as soon as possible due tongue previous conversations and interactions leading her to believe she was/is invited. Totally lame the way she is wording everything though. Sorry this is happening. Good luck and congratulations on your special day!

Does this mean that you wouldn't invite your uncle either? Just curious since that is your grandmother's brother as you mentioned and it sounds like she may have a good relationship with him and he is family?

I have to say I scrunched my forehead in confusion a few times reading this...the story seems so strange on both your Godmothers side and yours. I don't really understand why money ever got involved? You aren't close to her, why would you have agreed to let her pay your deposit and why was it ever a possibility? I mean yes, its nice to get money but it doesn't seem appropriate for you to take it, which you seem to have realized and made your own plan. But also, what is weird, is her assumption that you would and she would be contributing. Are they particularly wealthy and pay for a lot of family events and have come to think people expect this? Not to say you expected it but I am trying to think how this woman has gone from a person most likely not invited to someone who assumes she's contributing to your wedding?

The thumbs up would have also turned me off. I get why you don't want to invite her and I agree, this all has kind of an icky feeling to it and I wouldn't want to be reminded about it with her presence, however, this may be more drama than what its worth. She and your great uncle clearly assume they are invited, some sort of clarification would be needed and it also sounds like your grandmother would be upset. I also think, since you included her in your planning in the beginning, it would be rude not to include her and it would look bad, as if because she didn't give you money that is why she is not invited. I understand thats not the case but it can definitely be seen that way.

Yeah I guess following the etiquette, I would not invite my uncle as well. I love my uncle to death, and I have absolutely nothing against him, but I don't ever see him either... of course I can't invite him and not his wife, you know?

After reading this and realizing that all conversations have been either done via the phone or thru third parties could this just be a simple misunderstanding. I understand that she hasn't been active in your life for 5 years but you spoke before you got engaged. Then your grandmother relayed info that you shared. Again you do not know what was discussed between the two of them. The only way to know exactly what was said was to be either be there or to talk to both of them and figure out what is going on. Perhaps your grandmother expected her to pay for the venue and she felt it was on short notice. Perhaps it was something that had been discussed years before which you do know. I also understand how family members, God parents, and friends can go long periods of time without being actively involved. I also would not be sharing every detail of my wedding with people that I would not be inviting or didn't wish to invite. I think it kind if sounds rude that you told her the news, about the venue, asked for money, and now because you feel someway based off of phone convo's you don't wish to invite her. The choice is ultimately yours and your finances but I think you at least your Godmother a conversation regarding your feelings.

I totally agree with what are saying as well. I let this get out of control because my grams made it seem like this woman was going to make up for lost times.. I don't know why I cared so much.

I am not sure if they are wealthy because I haven't been around my dad's side of the family enough to see what they contribute towards.

Yeah I realized it didn't feel right to take it from her. You're right.. I felt strange. So I didn't want her to burden herself. I think my grandma would definitely be upset. Yeah I know how it will look if she is not invited. I realize it may look petty and tacky if I do not invite her. It's a terrible situation I put myself into. It didn't have to get to this point at all.

I understand what you are saying. That was my biggest mistake, sharing my details to someone I intially didn't even want there. So foolish of me. Everything happened so fast.. it's crazy.

Don't beat yourself up about it, it's happened and you can't fix that. However, I do think you should just invite her BUT I would speak to your grandmother first and tell her how you are feeling, and you ideally don't want her there but if she would like you to invite her, you will but to please then keep her out of it and you want to avoid anymore interactions like the ones you had...your Godmother will then just be a guest you see on the day and you don't pay her much attention. Just see this as something you're doing to keep the peace and make your grandmother happy?

I do hear what you are saying. I honestly don't want my godmother there... I really don't, but I do understand why you and a couple of other brides have suggested this. I do not want any disgruntled individuals holding something over my head for years to come, and it is my fault why things escalated to the point that it did, however do not like how my godmother was acting, as if she decided if my wedding was going to be good or not. It's a crazy situation, because it's one where NO ONE has been invited yet. No one has received invites yet, but I'm here because I've involved this one person to a degree that they really didn't need to be, and before the invites are even sent out, I feel obligated to invite her. All my fault!

Well you still have time, just sleep on it and see if time heals the wound a bit. Also, speak to your grandmother and get advice from her.

My godmother (also my aunt) cut ties from our family when I was a baby and I haven’t spoken to her since. I do not intend to invite her to our wedding, as I don’t feel like we have any relationship. Personally, if my godmother reached out to me at this point, I’d feel like she was only contacting me due to the wedding, as she could’ve reached out at any point over the years if she wanted a relationship. I would definitely stick with your gut feeling on this one. It’s too late to take back your prior conversations, but if you don’t feel comfortable inviting her, then don’t invite her. It may be tough to explain this to your grandma but if you sit her down and let her know how you’re feeling, she may be more understanding than you think.

Ashley, thank you so much for your insight. I am sorry this has happened to you and your family, but it does seem like you're doing okay, and that it doesn't affect you so much. My situation is slightly different, but both of us feel the same way, in that we don't our godmothers at our weddings... I will definitely have a talk with my grandma.
