This may be a stupid question, but do they charge you for doing your makeup? If so, how much?

Nonononononono! A lot of their makeup people have very little to no experience! They always colour match me wrong, it doesn't matter where I go! You're better off watching YouTube videos and DIYing your makeup!

Jordan, they make you buy a $50 gift card to use towards products after the fact.

I like how they charge you (so you get to take product home) - I have done it and I think they did a great job - went a little dark with my eyes once so be careful of that...however if your wedding is on a weekend the stores are SO busy and sort of stressful on a normal shopping day, much less your wedding day.

I have gone several times for different events. Met an amazing mua and she has done me up since. I would book her on the side.

Make sure you really like the make up of the person who is doing it. I LOVE make up and wear a lot all the time...even down to fake eyelashes. However, I wanted to try something new last week and asked the girl at sephora to do it for me and she did a TERRIBLE job. Like someone else said, they have little to no experience compared to someone who lets say works at mac and needs to get mac certifications (which are hard) to work there. needless to say, I didnt buy the product at sephora because the girl did a terrible job and I thought the make up looked bad. She also didnt trust me when I told her she used the wrong color and gave me a dirty look. Went to nordstrom a few days later, asked one of the girls there to try the same product on me...she used the color that should have been used in the first place. It was perfect.

Mac also makes you buy $50 worth of items.

So essentially its the same thing, but they have more training. a Mac make up artist outside of the store freelancing charges a TON though. I tried to book a few and just for make up they were all asking around $100 a person. If you want it done in the store, its totally worth the price.

Does that include their counter at a department store?

    Yes I believe it does.

Ask different department stores what their policy is. When I had my make up done the other day the girl who helped me at every counter worked for Armani but was able to help pick different lipsticks from different counters and did my eyebrows with the Anastasia eyebrow kit even though that totally wasnt her section. So somewhere like that might be able to do your make up for the same price and use different products.

There are pros and cons to having your makeup done in a retail setting. Here are some points to consider:

First and foremost, the makeup counter is a retail environment. Their main purpose is to sell cosmetics and make a profit. I am a State licensed esthetician, however, it is not required to have a license to apply makeup to the general public with intent to sell a cosmetic product. In fact, one can not charge for the application service and can only require payment for the products themselves. This is why the counters will require you to purchase cosmetics in exchange for the makeup application. Anyone can work behind the makeup counter applying makeup as long as they can sell and they do not need to be licensed or trained in skin care and/or makeup application.

Driving to the mall on your wedding day to have your makeup applied can result in many stressful obstacles. To begin with, you'll need to be there early enough to guarantee you will be able to get your turn to sit in the makeup chair.

Most cosmetic counters get extremely busy on the weekends with shopping consumers. If the sales reps will let you schedule an appointment time, you may have a better chance of keeping to your wedding day timeline.

Be sure they won't rush you through your makeup application on the day of your wedding. Sales people need to acknowledge customers and if a line is beginning to form, you want to know that you will have top priority.

Since you will have photos taken at your wedding, your makeup needs to be applied to best accent your features. Most cosmetic sales people will apply makeup for an every day look without considering the specifics required for photography.

I didnt read the blog stephanie just posted, but I do agree with her whole heartedly.

I am having a make up team come to my hotel room to do my hair/make up. Theyre great. But they also knew as soon as I started talking about make up what colors I was not allowed to do. (for instance, I asked about doing a gray smokey eye becayse I didnt want to do something too dark) I was told no we would not do gray because in wedding photos gray shows up weird and we ddint want to take the chance. So we went with a lighter black/brownish thing. It looked great and was totally what I wanted. But someone who works for a mall may not know how something is going to photograph and then you may end up with weird pictures.

I had my Glam Squad met me at my hotel suite. It just made that "I'm the Bride" feeling surreal. My photographer took prep photos, it was an experience that I will always remember.

I will definitely have hair/makeup come to my hotel room for my wedding. I was just thinking about maybe doing a mac counter or something for my makeup for my engagement photos and boudoir session, since I am so terrible with makeup.
