Should i Get a Tent?

Renee, on March 1, 2018 at 4:06 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 17
Hi everyone!
So I'll be having my wedding on July 28th of this year and it will be later in the evening from 5pm-10pm. My "venue" is my future mother-in-law's house (backyard wedding) which is literally right next to the river in Oakridge. My problem is that I don't know if I should get a tent or not. I'm not local to the area and won't even know what the weather is like until a week before the wedding as I do not have the funds to go up to my mother-in-law's house beforehand. So my question is, around that time of year is it cold during the later hours of the evening? Are there bugs? I've asked my mother in law but she hasn't really given me a straight answer. Also, if I do need a tent, should I get side walls? Or will that make it too hot inside? I should mention there will be tons of candles I will be using for centerpieces inside of the tent. Thank you in advance for the help!

Research local tent rentals in your FMIL’s area and find out how long out you’d have to rent one. If you can wait until the week of, then do that since the weather might look pretty good the week of your wedding. I also say no to walls unless there’s a torrential downpour planned on your wedding lol. Good luck!

Has she given you a straight answer about the bugs? Does your FH know? Did he grow up in the house? My house backs up to a large creek. I have so many bugs in the summer it’s gross. Also July where I am- it can be 85 even at 8pm. You can google what temperatures usually are where she lives. If that’s the case, a tent with sides and ac is needed.

Honestly better safe than sorry I would get the tent, with sides. Maybe start to call around and see what the policies are on renting them and what the cancellation policy is if it's not needed etc.

The real question is rain and no one can answer that for you, I would say you MUST get a tent. Get with a legit company to figure out the size. They will probably go to the house to survey the land. Even a slight slope will mess up the tent.

    Yes.
For the sake of rain and the comfort of your guests. And even if doesn't rain, at least there will be reliable shade for anyone who needs it on a hot July day.
I would consult a tent company to help guide you on where to put it, how big, if you should invest in side walls, and if candles are okay to be used.

I can’t imagine any outdoor wedding, no matter the temperature, without a tent. If it rains, you need a tent. If it’s sunny, you need a tent (being in direct or even partial sunlight in the 3 or so hours before sunset does not sound pleasant).

Where is Oakridge? If it’s in North America, I will assure you it won’t be “cold” on July 28.

Yes, you need a tent. Yes, it needs sides. The potential swing in temperature is huge. Also, if it’s in the 50s, expect people to leave early unless your tent has heaters.

Get a tent. No matter what. If it rains and you have no tent, you're screwed. As far as heat, bugs, etc. why won't your FMIL give you a straight answer? That would be helpful. It could be really hot in July so it'd be nice to know if you should get fans and such. Maybe push your FH to get an answer out of her.

You can look on weather.com for average high and low temps by location and month. But yes, a tent is on order, under pretty much any scenario. You can also pretreat the property for bugs, which might help.

I'd definitely look into getting a tent. You never know what could happen.

Also, you will probably want to pay for her yard to be landscaped and for an exterminator to come out and spray a few days before. I think they aren’t answering about bugs because there are probably plenty, because it’s outside, and they don’t want to alarm you. Assume there are bugs!

Yeah you will need a tent. I would echo @The Nuptials and recommend getting a professional to come out and spray for bugs. The tent isn't going to be airtight so this could be really uncomfortable and annoying for your guests even with the tent. I would speak to a tent company in your area with regards to making sure it is a comfortable temperature throughout the evening.

For a backyard wedding, I would suggest a tent no matter what. Thats the midle of summer, so you should expect it to be hot. As far as bugs, I would get the area treated in advance. Talk to a pest control company as get their recommendations. If it were me, I'd have two treatments prior to the wedding date. Based on my previous experience, the first would likely be about 5 weeks prior to your wedding date, then another about 1 week prior.

I would want to rent a tent no matter what. I wouldn’t want to risk it since the wedding will be entirely outside. I find too, that the older crowd prefers to have a tent to sit under. As for bugs, since you’re doing candles for centerpieces, you could always light some of those nice tiki torches near the water. It’ll be a nice touch decoration wise and the flames typically keep some of the bugs away! Getting the lawn treated a few weeks before the wedding is always a thought too!

July can be extremely hot, even late in the day, so renting an AC tent may be in your favor if you’re not a fan of the heat! I’m not sure what the cost would be for that, but I’ve been to weddings with the temperature control tents, and they’re definitely gorgeous!

Yes you should absolutely get a tent, this shouldn’t even be a question . I don’t even know where oak ridge is but I know you need a tent.

For the record, some tent companies automatically include sidewalls. You don’t need to use them if the conditions allow for it but it’s good to have them in case of weather or bugs or any of the mentioned concerns

Get a tent. It could rain, it could be windy - just get a tent.
