Should i get a back up dress?

Little Star, on July 5, 2018 at 12:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

A few things here...providing a backstory for clarity. Sorry if this gets long! So when I was 25, I was engaged before and my mom and I jumped the gun and purchased a dress from David’s Bridal. Dumb, I know. 😅 We did it before a date was set, and long story short...that engagement crumbled.

The dress is a size 4, and I was around 120-130lbs at that time. It’s hard for me to remember. No idea what my measurements were at that time. I was hoping to wear it at my wedding. Well, now I’m 31 (I’ll be 32 when I get married) and my body has changed. I’m currently around 140-145 and trying really hard to tone up. My wedding is just under 10 months from now. I’m pretty sure I can reach my body goals by then but I’m still really concerned about the fit of the dress, and also not being able to lose enough fat to fit it. The dress wasn’t taken in at all, only alterations were hemming for length since I’m short (5’2”). I can make my waist smaller but no too much I can do about my hips as they have just widened with age. I know wedding dresses run small usually.

Unfortunately, I can’t try on the dress because it’s at my mom’s house. She lives two hours away and I just haven’t got a chance to get there and pick it up. I’ve been so nervous about doing that anyway because I have a good feeling it won’t fit, and that will just stress me out more.

So, with all that being said, should I purchase a back up dress in case this one doesn’t fit? I found one on Lulu’s that I absolutely love and it’s only $110. It also looks similar to my original dress. I plan to dress it up with a belt if I end up getting it.

What at do you guys think? Currently, I am 5’2” 142lbs, 32B, 31 in waist, & 38in hips. Top photo is the original dress, and bottom photo is the dress I am thinking of purchasing from Lulu's.

I would 100% do a back up dress. You don't want to be stuck with no dress.

First off, I would try on the old dress ASAP. A lot changes in 7 years and you may not even feel the same about the dress anymore anyway.

If you really doubt the fit, go ahead and order a backup that you love. Make sure it's a dress you want to wear though.

I agree. Definitely try it on ASAP. You are trying to guess how you think it will fit, and you need to know for sure how it fits and if it needs altered, or if the alterations it would need would even be possible.

I'd order the back up dress and also try on the old dress. Lulu's has a great return policy and good customer service so if you don't want it, you can send it back. Worst case scenario, you spend an extra $110 that you can get back.

Always better to have a back up dress than no dress!

I would try your best to get to your mom's house and try on the first dress before you spend money on a second one. You might find that you don't even like the style anymore, in which case you would probably want to shop for a different dress altogether as both the dresses pictures are a similar style. You may also find that the old one will work perfectly with a few alterations. The only way to know for sure will be to try it on.

I personally wouldn't wear a dress that I intended to wear for someone else whether it fits or not

Well, I didn’t buy it or intend to wear it for my ex, I bought it for me! Plus he never even saw it.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I texted my mom my concerns and how I wanted to get it and try it on ASAP. She keeps telling me not to stress...easier said than done haha. She doesn’t think I should buy anything else right now. I wish it were in my possession because then I would know for sure. Not knowing how it will fit is giving me major anxiety. She just keeps telling me to focus on something else. 😕

Hey there! If you're leery about the fit of the first dress, I think getting a back up wouldn't hurt at all! It's stunning! Smiley love However, it's best to do what will work best for you at the moment I hope everything turns out well!! Hang in there!! Smiley smile

Get to your mom's n try the dress. You are 10 months away. You can always buy the second dress if the first doesn't fit. You still have enough time to order from lulus.
Ps: I love the first dress more. But won't it keep bringing back the Broken engagement from 7 years ago... Just as you told us on here, I believe you will keep mentioning it whenever you see a picture of you in it.
I personally will sell the first and buy a new dress.

    New dress!

    1) New fiance(e), new dress

    2) Our bodies seem to change every 5-10 years, even when you stay the same weight our old clothes don't fit the same. Even if you can lose the weight you might not like how the dress fits. Get a dress you love on your body now...with and without the extra weight loss.

Hm, you guys have brought up a good point actually with the dress being from a broken engagement. Initially this didn’t bother me, but now I’m having second thoughts.

I really appreciate the honesty and input. I’m going to purchase the second dress to try it out. If there is a problem I can return it and try something else. I will be getting the first dress soon as well and I will try it on and see how it feels. Now I am leaning towards selling the first dress. 🤔 I hope that will not make my mom upset. I have a lovely veil and purple high heels that went with the first dress. I would like to keep those.

Okay, I was in the same exact situation. My other dress is in AZ and I’m in CO. And I just ended up getting a different dress. It was kind of bothering my fiancé I already had a dress from a previous relationship that didn’t work. But he would have never told me to get a new one. But I did because it bothered him. I would definitely get a different dress.

Update if anyone was curious. I got to my mom’s and got the dress. It doesn’t fit but no worries, I ended up buying the back up dress and it should arrive tomorrow. I’m going to be selling the first dress because I don’t want to be pressured to try to fit into a piece of clothing. Would rather get a dress that fits my body now. Thanks for your advice everyone. 😊
