Should I dryclean my wedding dress?!

Tolu, on May 20, 2016 at 6:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I'm not sure what to do right now and I'll welcome your advice. Do folks usually dryclean their wedding dress before the wedding? My dress has a couple stains on it and so far the places I've gone to want to charge between $250 to $300. That's like 15% of the actual cost of the dress! That seems too expensive and I'm contemplating trying to take out the stains myself because I'm also worried that they may ruin the dress. Please help!

Send it to a professional versed in cleaning wedding dresses specifically. do not chance this with your average drycleaner.

Very long story, but I wasn't the one who got it stained. It may have been stepped on by accident though.

Holy crap! The thing that drives me up a wall is that as soon as you say "wedding" anything, the prices go up like 500%! I took my dress for pressing to the dry cleaners, because I had dyed it you wouldn't automatically assume it was a wedding dress. So they charged me $10 to press my "prom dress." I guarantee it would have been a hell of a lot more if I had said wedding dress! So sad.

But yeah...make sure you go to a reputable cleaner who actually has a lot of experience with wedding dresses, so scary!

    Date twin!

See if you can find a seamstress that can steam & press it. They can usually get stains like that out & charge way less.

Being a dry cleaner for 22+ years, if there are stains very good chance they won't come out..cleaning wedding. Gowns is very expensive because they have to be cleaned by themselves and pressing them takes close to an hour for one person...working on the stains is also time

Consuming because they go around the dress section by section...

That being said..should you do it before the wedding... I wouldn't unless the stains are highly visible...but be prepared to pay that amount even if they don't come out..they don't guarantee stain removal...as they have no idea what it is or

How long it has been there or even if someone tried to pre treat it..

The seamstress who altered my dress also steam cleaned it. Perhaps you can look into that.

And I'm saying you're wrong. If you take another giant stained white gown in there. It's still going to be expensive.

People say that because they aren't used to what it actually costs to do anything on this scale. Or with that level of detail.

Hahahah...oh Jo...I guess all the articles that talk about holding back telling vendors that you are planning a wedding until after you get pricing are wrong. Albeit...I am not an expert on these things...just what I have read.

They are. That's a really good way to get a bad service or the wrong service.

Jo's right. I agree that things with "wedding" in the service name are generally higher prices than those without. For good reason. People don't fuck around when it comes to their wedding. Quality, timeliness, and overall service are generally held to a much, much higher standard when dealing with a wedding. People are a lot less willing to settle so vendors tend to put a lot more time and labor into wedding services.

To answer some of the questions, it is a somewhat big dress. I have attached a picture. Also, yes I got it from DB. I'll call to ask how much it is to dryclean with them.

I found a place that said it would cost only $80 after I showed them a picture. They said I would have to bring it 2 weeks in advance though.
