Just Said Yes October 2021

Should I cancel or postpone?

Stevi, on August 8, 2021 at 3:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 13
My fiancé and I currently live in South Carolina ( I am originally from California) last year we decided to have our wedding in Pismo Beach, California. A lot of my family is still in California including my Father who is too ill to travel as to why we arranged the wedding in California. Everything has been set for October 2,2021. We thought we were in the clear but with the delta variant on the rise we are not sure what to do…
Our wedding is small, less than 30 people. But… with it being a destination wedding for us and a few of his family members We are not sure what to do. A lot of people who RSVP’d yes are now not comfortable traveling. Which I understand. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? Or what would you do?
Any advice is greatly appreciated

If it's only 30 people I personally wouldn't cancel it because that's not a lot anyways. Do you have an idea how many people would actually come out of those 30? My husband and I are having our reception the same day and our guest count is about 90. So far about 60 people have RSVP yes, we decided we're going through with it anyways especially since we got married last year

So far my count is only at 15 and I believe that’s going to be the final count. I think we will be fine, I just keep hearing the rise of delta in California and I worry about traveling across country.

I think it’s really a personal choice of your comfort. I actually live very close to Pismo (in Lompoc) and every thing is still open and running up there. They even just had the fair in Paso.

You have to do what you are most comfortable with. I’m getting married on 10/22/21 and we decided that no matter what we are getting married that day. We are east coast based but the wedding is in California. Most of our guest are coming from out of town. If people don’t feel comfortable traveling they can opt out. We will get married with whoever can come. Even if that’s just the two of us!

If you wanted to still stick with the wedding day, and you had a majority of your guests who RSVP, could you set up a live stream so they could still watch it? I had a friend who streamed their wedding via facebook to a link to their wedding page so everyone who wanted could still watch it.

I hope things work out!!!!! Smiley heart

I wouldn’t postpone. Although I doubt it will happen this way, there’s always a possibility of more lockdowns or restrictions and I would take the opportunity to go ahead with it rather than risk missing the window.

Cases in California (or at least LA county) are plateauing at this moment. You should be okay by October. I’m having an 80 person outdoor wedding in September. Over half of my guest list is traveling from the east coast and as of now everybody is excited to come. All of my guests happen to be vaccinated as well.

Remember that California has 40 million people - most counties are doing their part to slow the spread and it’s working. They expect us to peak and drop by first week of September. I would come out and enjoy your day. Have it outdoors if that’s possible!

My wedding was going to be on my birthday (Oct 2 2021) for roughly 50 guests with outdoor ceremony and reception but we decided to postponed for Oct 1 2022 and I am glad we are doing that.

If you have the time and resources, my suggestion is to postpone it till next year. But whichever decision you couple might have, as long as you both decided to it, then there will be no regrets.

Hi Stevi! Sorry you are in this situation.

With a smaller wedding, I think you have more flexibility to have a safe event or enact extra precautions that may make guests feel safe.

Do you know if all of your guests have been vaccinated? Vaccines are not 100% but provide a strong layer of protection, and the more people who have this protection, the safer everyone is. Add in masks and social distancing precautions in the weeks leading up to your wedding, and your wedding should be a very low risk event. For those traveling, there is still masking required for travel so that provides protection as well. The biggest risk is close interactions with those who are not vaccinated.

I would likely not postpone at this time, but stay in communication with your guests to get a sense of their comfort and willingness to travel, or participate in other precautions (limit social interactions, wear masks, and distance leading up to your event, or obtaining a negative test or doing a rapid test upon arrival).

I actually live in Grover Beach, literally right next to Pismo Beach and in the same county. With that small of a group of people, I think you're most likely totally fine to go ahead with your wedding this year. As PP said, we just had the Mid-State Fair up in Paso and there's a Craft Beer festival scheduled in late October in Atascadero. What's your venue?
