Should i add an illusion neckline to to my strapless sweetheart dress?

Ngoc, on January 25, 2021 at 7:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Last year I placed an order for a custom strapless sweetheart sheath dress with lace and ivory/nude tulle. It comes with a de-attachable aline skirt for a second look. This was done out of the country with the expectation that I'll go in for the fitting and pickup when we go visit my fiancé's family. However, it doesn't look like the ban of travel to other countries is going to be lifted any time soon and I plan to keep my April 23, 2021 date for the elopement / micro wedding. I'm going to have the boutique ship the gown here instead, but since I'm doing the measurements myself, I'm worried that it won't be precise and that the strapless look wouldn't sit well. I'm not sure if there will be enough time for me to take it to a tailor here to get it adjusted.

As such, I'm contemplating whether to request an illusion neckline to be added so that the fit is more forgiving. Some photos below. Would appreciate it if anyone can share their experience with an illusion neckline and whether it's more comfortable than strapless.

I’d contact the seamstresses in your area to see what their turnaround time is. If you add more to your dress it might delay you getting your dress.

I worked in bridal for three years, and I would not advise adding illusion. Illusion is actually less forgiving in many cases, and since your dress is boned (according to the first picture) it’ll be held up by your waist/hips, not your bust. For measurements, check YouTube for guides on taking your own measurements. Hope that helps!

I *hate* illusion. I think it adds more of a distraction than anything.

I think it looks beautiful as is and maybe you can go somewhere locally to get measurements?

Illusion makes a dress look a bit cheap to me. If you measure using the boutique's instructions, you shouldn't be too far off. I would take the risk and have a tailor on stand by!

I think that ill fitting illusion would be worse looking and harder to fix quickly than an imperfect strapless fit. I’d just get the dress asap and try to book an appointment with a local seamstress who might be able to do quick work. Actual alterations don’t take that long— it’s more finding someone with the spare time. If you explain the situation, you may be able to rush alterations locally (maybe for an upcharge). Wouldn’t hurt to book an appointment and then cancel it if the dress hasn’t come in yet (also maybe for a cancelation fee).

My dress was illusion and it was lovely but only because it was tailored to me and sat very flat. Illusion only functions as illusion if it is perfectly adjusted, otherwise it can be loose and pocket-y and doesn’t make for as nice a look.

Thanks for your input! I didn't realize the purpose of boning was as you described. I'll keep my dress as is then.

Agreed. That was the reason why I didn't ask for it in the first place. Thanks for your input, i'll keep it as is.

That's a great idea! I'll look into getting measurements from a wedding gown alternations place instead of doing it at home.
