Should 6lbs make a difference in how my dress fits

Sarah, on May 27, 2019 at 1:29 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
My dress was recently completed with alterations. (after waiting since February for it.) The straps needed to be taken in, and the dress was originally too tight around my ribs so it was taken out. (Which really sucks cause it costs more) when I tried it on after the alterations were done, it still felt really tight around my ribs, I know I’ve gained 6lbs since the first alterations but I feel like that shouldn’t make the dress as tight as it is.( I cant breathe in it) I feel bad if I have to ask them to take it out again, but I also feel like an alterations person should know to take it out a little more than 1/2 inches. I don’t know what to do and am already feeling guilty for the weight that’s been gained and also for how much it’s cost. (Over $1400 total)

It depends on how fitted your dress is and where you gain or lose weight in your body. My seamstress had to take my dress in at least 5 times because I kept losing weight. I would go in 2 weeks after a fitting and it would be too big after she took it in. But everyone’s body is different.

I think 6lbs definitely makes a difference. Can you lose the 6lbs before your wedding day? That way, you can see if the seamstress didn't take it our properly, or if it's your weight gain.

You’re seamstress might have only let it out that much because that’s all the extra fabric it had. I know with my dress if I needed it let out it would only be possible to let it out half a size.

Yes, 6 lbs could make a difference especially when something is tailored to you like a wedding dress. Like Rachel said above, there is only so much space to let something out as well. Seam allowances are typically between 1/4” and 5/8” and you need at least 1/4” seam allowance when it is done so there likely isn’t a lot of room to play with there.

That Makes sense. I guess I’m just a little disappointed and had this huge expectation of my dress fitting perfectly and I’ve felt like they measured me and ordered the wrong size from day 1. I’ve been pretty skinny and have had trouble trying to gain weight for the past 6 years, and now that I HAVE to maintain my weight, my body decided to do what I’ve wanted for so long.

I’m sure I could lose the weight, but as soon as I take the dress out of the store, I can’t go back and tell them they did something wrong.

How tall are you? I'm 5'10" and 6 pounds on me is like nothing. I can gain or lose 20 pounds and still be the same dress size if it's an A line.

I’m 5’5”. When I originally ordered the dress I weighed 112. When the dress came, I weighed 118. (Which was why they had to take it out) After alterations the dress still felt as tight as it first sister and My weight has since gone up to 124. I have no shame in gaining weight, this is actually a healthy weight for me. So for my dress to be as tight as it is (around my rib cage) Seems odd to me. At this point I am not excited to wear my dress and it breaks my heart to have to lose weight and go back to being underweight.
