Shopping for Picky Mother

My mother is incredibly picky about her mother of the bride dress and is super stressed about it especially since I have what I'm wearing figured out. The plan is for her to wear something plum, tea length, with fitted cap/short sleeves that can be paired with a sweater. She hates surplice necklines or anything sheer. She'd prefer a scoop neckline and solid fabric. She doesn't want it fitted like a pencil skirt, would rather have a tiny bit of flare in the skirt. And just a straight hem, not hi-low or something like that. She really wants it to be something she can wear more than once. I'm having a hard time finding something she likes. I don't care if it's a dress or a blouse-skirt combination (either solid color or complementary), as long as the blouse doesn't have buttons up the front. She has to see things to know if she likes them. Can y'all work your magic and find some options for her to look at?

Could you find a designer to make her dress? Or if you find one that's really close you could have a seamstress add sleeves, hem it, or possibly even alter the neck line.

I told her we could get alterations (my fmil is a seamstress) but that's too stressful for her and she just wants something off the rack.

I think this is going to be hard to find in plum. Also, I think a plum dress with the silhouette you are describing is going to be difficult to wear again. Would you be opposed to her wearing a black dress? There are tons more options to choose from in black, and it would make the dress much easier to wear again.

Unfortunately since she has a pretty specific idea of what she wants she's probably going to have to be flexible on something in order to find one she likes off the rack. Like Cece said, even being open to different colors might help her find something.

I’d highly recommend checking Dillard’s, both in-person and online. My mom and fiancé’s mom bought their dresses in navy blue from there. My fiancé’s mom bought hers in store, while my mom tried on a few (to better understand what size worked for her) and decided to order a few dresses online (store inventory varies from store to store), as they have a 30 day return policy.
