Shopping for bridesmaid pantsuit?

KarenO, on September 13, 2017 at 3:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Hi. My bridesmaids and I are going to start shopping for their dresses in the next few weeks. I have one BM who prefers to wear pants. I told her it's up to her if she wants to pick out a nice pantsuit to match the dress color, match the groomsmen's suits or mix it up with both colors - however she feels most comfortable. BM will be in light pink/blush and GM will be in tan.

Do places like David's Bridal have a nice selection of pants/separates for women? (That's the first place I plan to go.) I checked their website and saw a few bridal pantsuits, but nothing really for the wedding party. I want to include this BM in the shopping trip, but don't want her to feel bad or awkward if they don't have anything for her to see or try on.

Is stuff like that mostly online? Honestly I'm not finding much online either apart from regular pantsuits that you'd buy in a store - nothing really wedding-party-related. I'd like to be able to match the color at least, if she wants to.

There are tons of options out there - call ahead to the store. If you go into a department store, dressy pant suits that look like bridesmaids dresses are all over the place. I have a groomswoman who wanted to wear a suit.

Thanks @Megan. I was surprised when I started to google things that I didn't find more options. I thought it would be something pretty common these days.

Sadly, I doubt you will find much at a place like David's Bridal. I would definitely still invite her, though. She can still have opinions on dresses and color palates even if she isn't going to be wearing one herself.

    Okay so.

Is she just not a dress girl, or is she butch/masculine of center presenting?

If its the first, there are some great one piece pant suit things out there. maybe DB has them. definitely check out Asos. But I know that my FW would feel equally uncomfortable in something that femme as she would in a dress.

If it's the second, I'd suggest having her wear a blazer/jacket the same color as your bridesmaids. It might be hard to find a whole suit in the color that matches without looking like hillary clinton, so you might consider having her do separates. That's what FW is doing for a wedding shes in in a couple of weeks. The bridesmaids are wearing burgundy, the groomsmen wearing navy. She got a burgundy blazer. wearing navy dress pants.

ETA: hmmm i just read your colors and dont love the idea of blush blazer/tan pants

What about checking into a bridesmaids separates line? I know BHLDN carries some--there have to be others that do this too. you may be able to have her in the same top as your other girls, even if she wears a jacket over it, and find or have pants made to match? Or you could simply order fabric from the dress designer and have a suit made to her liking? Wouldn't be cheap but maybe an alternative if she wants to be in the same color as the other girls...

ETA: prettywitty&gay has some great points/options. if she is not very femme maybe have her match the bridesmaids via smaller touches like a shirt, pocket square, jacket liner...and in a suit more like the guys.

As far as including her in the day--I'm not sure how much you can expect to see in store for her to try given that it isn't as mainstream as one would expect. It may take you and her going on a separate trip/spending time shopping online to find her something she likes. and don't pressure her to join on dress shopping with the other girls if she feels awkward about it. sounds like you are being super considerate of her feelings thus far, so keep it up.

@PrettyWitty&Gay She wore a somewhat feminine pantsuit to her own wedding. She's a cargo shorts and T-shirt type of person, really. I think she's really open to wearing anything, as long as it's not a dress.

And I know a lot of people don't like tan for suits, but that's what FH wants.

@APZ I will check out BHLDN!

edit: Also, when I said I wouldn't mind if she matched the GM suits, I meant if she wants to wear a suit herself, I'd be cool with it too. She has worn masculine-style suits in the past too. I just want her to feel comfortable and be with me on my big day!

@I wasnt hating on tan suits, just questioning my own suggestion of pairing it with the blush bridesmaid color.

Definitely check out bhldn, asos, and maybe wildfang!

@PrettyWitty&Gay sorry, I didn't mean to direct that at you. I just remember a thread from the other day where people were disliking tan suits and had to acknowledge it.

So pant "rompers" are totally in next year apparently. (Don't remember where I read this maybe online via Pinterest or emails from WW?)

Not a trend I would get behind but they're kinda cute. These are from lulus.

ETA- okay now I kind of want this. It's actually super cute. Lol. Would this be her style or still too girly? There's lots of options on Macy's or nordstroms, lulus, and maybe even h&m if you don't have a too complicated color pallet

@Ashley I think something like that would be too girly, but I will check out that site too.

I'm thinking that she and I will maybe do a separate shopping trip too.

A lot of professional wear is available in tan so I think she would be able to find a nice suit! You might have to skim a few stores to find a shade that matches GM. she can always wear a pretty blush blouse to stand apart. I can't think of pantsuit reco's though...sorry Smiley sad good luck to you and her!

@MelissaHH sorry I don't have any advice for that.

@Emily thanks. I did see some stuff on Pinterest just now. I think I will have to just talk to her to see what she wants to do.

Would she be comfortable in a blush jumpsuit? There are tons of those online. You guys could look online on phones while everyone else is trying stuff on.

Thanks for posting the options @AdventuresofRuth

@Mrs. Fall Bride wow there are a lot of options there. Thanks!

I'm not sure how she'd feel about a one-piece but I'll ask her.

Yeah, i think a lot of people here suggest one pieces as non-dress options, but honestly, theyre just as femme as a dress.

i think you'd be best sticking with separates.
