Shoes - switching to flats causing issues with hem

Kati, on May 31, 2017 at 4:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I've read a lot of you are wearing heels for the ceremony and flats for the reception and it's an awesome idea. Has anybody talked with their seamstress about this? I don't want my dress to be to short for the ceremony or be tripping on it during the reception. Just wondering if it causes issues with the hem line. Past brides if you did this what was your experience?

I am following on this. I have planned to wear 5 in heels for the ceremony and flats for the reception. I had to have my dress taken out to make it long enough for the ceremony so I didn't even think about it being too long. UGH.

Take both shoes to the alterations appointments.

I went from 4 inch heels to 2 inch wedges and my seamstress made the dress just a smidge short in heels so it wouldn't drag in the wedges. You couldn't even tell. The bustle helped a lot too.

Can you wear a lower wedge instead of huge heel to flats?

The hem of the dress is often trashed by being dragged around the floor all night. If you can't stay in heels can you switch to a wedge flip flop or something similar instead?

I never thought of wedged flip flops! I may be ordering a pair as well

I was told to wear wedge heels but I could find any so I ended up wearing flip flops the bottom of my dress still got dirty. Hopefully you can find some wedge sandals that work

The bustle might help a bit

I'm stuck with this as well which is why I'm trying to find heels no more than 3 inches and I'm getting married in the grass so they have to be easy to walk in. It's been tough to find something that works!

That's why I bought and wore 2 inch heels - or maybe they were 1.5 inches? - all evening.

I don't wear high, high heels to start. My seamstress told me to bring both and she can hem between the 2. I bought these sneakers because they have little lift, then no more than 2 inch heels.

I'm so glad you asked this OP. I was just reading one of the "show me your shoes" threads the other day, and was seriously wondering how people switch from huge heels to flats in their dress.

I am actually wearing flats for both the reception and the ceremony. I am not a heel person

For anyone wearing flip flops for the reception - please be careful as there is no ankle support and when your dancing (and possibly a little tipsy) it could be easy to trip and very easy for someone to step on your foot (you know there's always someone's drunk uncle who lives to bust out a move on the dance floor). Consider closed flats or sneakers. You don't want those pretty tootsies messed up for your honeymoon.

This was a discussion I had with my seamstress so I decided on 1 in wedges so when I switch it won't really matter

@Stephanie - It's easy when you have a short dress! Smiley winking But yeah, I probably wouldnt go for heels at all if I were in a floor length dress just because of the logistics of switching between heels and flats.

I had about a 2.5 to 3 in heel for the ceremony and had it hemmed to that length...when I put on flats I was able to walk fine i just had to kick a little more. I think my bustle may have helped shorten it a tad as well.
