SHOES! 5 -inch heels? Am I crazy? (And any styling tips for my dress?)

Lynn, on January 15, 2015 at 3:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

My dress arrived and the hem is a little long. The designer (after seeing photos of me in it with ~4.75" heels) recommends that I find an even higher shoe (rather than hemming it), as it will create a longer line and add to the "elegance" of it.

After seeing myself in it, I agreed. (I'm 5' 0; fiancé is 6'1.)

Photo #1: me in ~4.75" heels

Photo #2: me in 5.25" heels

Photo #3: 3" heels I own (I'd have to get it hemmed even shorter)

Sky-high Steve Maddens I'm considering ($60 on sale).:

Are there any other brides wearing sky-high heels? Is it worth it for the photos?

Or do you recommend just hemming the dress and going with 3" comfort??

FYI, I'm changing dress (& shoes) at the reception so I won't be in the same shoes all day.

And ... any styling tips for me? Veil? Birdcage? Jewelry? Undergarments? Thank you!

Sorry about the blurring! I wanted to maintain a bit of privacy online and I didn't have any other way to edit the photo. Smiley sad

As someone who loves wearing high heels, I would NOT do it for my wedding. I rather go with comfort.

It looks great in the super high heels...can you wear them all night, though?

You Don't Have To Go That High.. You Can If You Want To Show A Little Skin. I Love The Dress & The Shoes. Also Depends On Where Your Wedding Will Be.

I love super sky high heels. Just practice walking in them if you're not use to wear platform heels.

Platforms often make the heel much more comfortable than a basic heel with no platform in my opinion. Just takes a bit of getting use to.

If you were to take the heels off, you wouldn't want that much of the dress dragging the ground. I would say go for it for pics/ceremony/etc. But there is no way I would want to dance all night in those. I wouldn't want to change into more comfortable shoes for the reception and have the dress be too long.

I'd be worried about falling, but unless you are a pro at walking in 5" heels all the time.

IMO, I'd just get it hemmed to the proper length for shoes that I'm comfortable in. Problem solved.

As far as a veil, for your dress, anything would look very pretty. I think a birdcage would look lovely.

Since your dress is simple in detail, most any jewelry would work as well.

For undergarments, go with something that will not be seen when you have your dress on. Seamless, nude/white color, etc. Good luck!

Kendra makes a good point - if you are going to take them off at all your dress would be super long.

Thanks so much for the input, ladies!

The ceremony is outdoors, on packed dirt/gravel, with a decline going down to the seating area. (Thankfully I'll be holding onto to someone on the way down, right?) Smiley smile

The reception will be indoors in a carpeted ballroom.

I plan on changing into a qipao (Mandarin-style dress) later anyway. Actually, 2 different ones: one will be long, the last one will be short (knee-length) to end the night in. And I'm pretty sure I can just wear some (more sensible) heels with both of them that I already have sitting in my closet.

It's funny, the (beaten up) shoes that I was going to wear with the wedding dress (which are the 4.75" heels in the first photo actually fell apart (the sole separated) as soon as I hit 'send' on this forum post and walked away from the computer. (I had them on my feet. haha) They are years old and I actually bought them second-hand!

I love heels but I don't want to wear high ones on my wedding day. I want to be comfortable and not end up tripping by accident. You will look beautiful with short or tall heels. Do what makes you comfortable.

Personally, I would wear shoes that were comfortable to walk in and just hem the dress. Do you actually wear really high heels on a regular basis? If you are not a regular heel-wearer you probably will look ridiculous walking in them lol, not to be mean. Especially after reading about where your ceremony is and what you'll be walking on, I definitely think you should stick to a lower heel and not a stiletto!

Personally, I think that might be too high. Like Kendra said, you'll have so much extra fabric once you take your shoes off and think of all the standing you'll be doing before you even get to the reception. I've also found that the tiniest difference in heel height makes a huge difference. I can walk in a pair of 4.5" shoes no problem. But I trip all the time when I try to wear 5" heels.

If you're comfortable in high high heels, go for it. But if you usually wear a lower heel, I wouldn't risk it.

Wow, sounds like most people recommend sensible shoes for the wedding.

Though, I think some people missed that I am intending to change both dress and shoes at the reception. So, it was mainly for pictures that I would have the higher heels (and so hopefully look a little longer and leaner for photos?)

I really did have all intentions of wearing the old shoes I had (4.25" off-white, platform mules) but as I mentioned, as soon I posted, the sole fell apart! (I guess I could always Super Glue it back?)

But oddly enough, last night, I talked to a shoe sales lady who happened to know my venue and come from the surrounding area (photo of the ceremony space attached).

She made a good point (and this is for any other brides reading this post who have a similar outdoor ceremony venue): if the ground (pressed dirt, in my case) is wet from rain (from the day before or hours earlier), the ground will be softer. So, she highly recommended not wearing a stiletto heel and steering towards a flatter/squarer heel.

So, it sounds like all of you ladies have helped me come to the answer, wearing my 3" wedges (the ones in Photo #3) sound like the best option. Be safe (and comfortable!)... and forsake vanity?? Smiley smile (Man, I wish I was taller than 5'0!)
