Sheet cakes for a large wedding.

Shanelle, on May 27, 2016 at 9:21 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

Has anyone used several sheet cakes for a large reception? If so how did it go and how many did you need? We're looking at about 250 people.

Our bakery did a simple 3 tiered cake. We did sheet cake for the rest because they cut it in the back and no one would know.

I used to work at a wedding venue, and we did this all the time. The couple would have a smaller cake for cutting and display and then we cut sheet cakes in the back and the catering team passed out to guests. No one had a clue that it was sheet cake. It worked out well. I am not sure how many you would need, but if you check with your local grocery store or bakery, they would know. Even Publix online ordering tells you how many people each cake will serve. Best of luck!

We're doing sheet cakes, and our baker told us to plan on a smaller number of people eating cake then how many you expect to come because not everyone will take a piece of cake and you don't want a ton left over! I'm sure whoever you order from will be able to help you get the right amount for your reception.

I was thinking of going this route, and read somewhere that a full sheet cake serves approximately 100 guests. You'd definitely want to confirm with your bakery.

Ultimately, we went with a venue that has the cake included in the package, so my research came to an end. LOL

We are doing cutting cakes - which is different than a sheet cake. Sheet cakes are typically 2 layers of cake and one of filling. Wedding cakes are taller and have more layers - so it won't look the same.

We are doing 12X12 cutting cakes - they serve 60-70 each (depending on who is hacking them up)

Any bakery you're looking into should be able to answer that question.

Ok... so a typical serving of wedding cake is 1"x2"x2"... a 1/4 sheet feeds 54... 1/2 sheet feeds 108 and a full sheet feed 108. If you ever is cutting up goes for a "party size" which is 2"×2"×2"... a 1/4 sheet feeds 24... 1/2 sheet feeds 54 and the full feeds 96. Usually most venues will slice the wedding size. So you need to ask your bakery what size sheet cakes they offer.. most typical i see is 1/4 and 1/2 sheets.. because they are easier to transport.

Ask your bakery. But sheet cakes are typically a good way to save money for a large crowd! Also, my baker said to take your guest list and subtract 10% and that's how much cake to order for. It worked perfectly for our wedding!

I think this is an excellent idea. My brother even went so far as to just have a 'fake cake' on display. It wasn't till I was half-way done with my piece that I suddenly wondered, "Hey, when did they....?" and looked around and there was some guy boxing up the fake cake. I think having a small cake for cutting and a couple huge sheet cakes for eating is a great idea.
