"Sheath" dresses?

Caitlyn, on October 13, 2015 at 9:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

So I've been looking at bridal gown shapes and I'm really confused by the silhouette "sheath". Can anyone give any picture examples of this silhouette or a good explanation of what exactly that means?

It has to do with how the seam is cut from top to bottom of the dress. Have you looked under the "Dresses" category on WW? It has a lot of good pictures of sheath dresses and how they fall on a bride's body.

They kinda just hug you body to hips. They're similar to mermaid or trumpet but don't flare as much at the bottom. I personally bought a sheath dress and love it!

A sheath dress is basically flat from shoulders down. Not for people with a big bust or butt without serious alterations.

Here is one by Maggie Sottero: http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?style=4MS997&page=0&pageSize=36&attrib30=275&keywordText=

It's also called a "column" dress. Basically, it is just a long gown, not super form-fitting, and usually without a long train.

Sheath is like a colume dress usualy straight down form the waist

it has no extra poof like a ballgown

and not alot of structure like a mermaid

    this is the best example

Awesome, all the ones I seem to like keeping saying they are sheath so I thought I should figure out what that meant. =]

I feel like Beka's description is the most accurate. If it helps this is my sheath dress. I was particularly fond of it because anything too structured around my hips accentuated things I don't like about my stomach. Originally I wanted an a-line but I fell in love with this one first Smiley winking (ETA: this is unaltered of course)

There are a lot of helpful images if you search Google Images for "bridal gown silhouettes," like this one:

This is the stock photo of mine and one that i posted in my mini BAM. I believe the sheath dresses can come in all different shapes for how they flair or don't on the bottom, as far as i know they tend to be more slinky than having a shape on their own.
