Serving top tier of cake at reception or eating it at the wedding night hotel?

Michelle, on January 31, 2021 at 1:55 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16
Because countless couples choose not to save the cake for a year (many horror stories of friends/family getting sick, not tasting right even with recommended wrapping) and cake ingredients are not intended to be frozen for any period, even a day as most baking blogs attest to, the tradition is falling by the wayside. The taste and texture of fresh vs frozen cake changes drastically even after a day in airtight packaging from the bakery.

Cake saved for a year in medieval times and since was actually fruitcake (the same that people give at Christmas that you love or hate) for the sole intention to last through the first child's christening on the first wedding anniversary. But people today don't schedule their lives like that, nor is fruitcake a flavor option. Also most bakers provide a freshly baked cake on the first anniversary, either free or low cost. So freezing cake makes no sense to take one bite and toss the rest just for tradition's sake.
Many couples also say they choose to take the top tier to their wedding night hotel since that's the only cake they get other the one bite they fed each other.
What are you planning to do with you cake or what did you do?

So our venue ended up saving our top tier for us without us asking, and we took it with us to the hotel, but ended up tossing it the next day when we were packing up to leave. We were leaving for our honeymoon the next day and this cake tier was huge. We each had a full slice at our reception, which was delicious. Our bakery will recreate the top tier for $24, so that's what we did for our 1st anniversary.

Another option is sending home extra cake with local guests which is very common and doesn't waste food since they are not cheap.

Yeah, we were the last to leave. Tried to pawn it off on our parents and a few people who also stayed at the hotel, and everyone said no. Luckily our cake was included in our venue/catering price, so it wasn't too bad ($130 per person for the ceremony/reception space, chairs, tables, etc. and the food and full open bar for cocktail hour and reception). I hate wasting food, but we didn't know they were gonna box up the top tier and by the time we found out was at the very end of the night when everyone was mostly gone. So it I'd what it is 🤷‍♀️.

We plan to serve the entire cake at the wedding and allow guests to take slices home. We'll probably take a couple slices for ourselves, but not a whole tier since our bakery provides a free top tier on our anniversary.

That is bizarre though. I wonder if they even know they are creating inconveniences with that lack of communication because no one has come forward to a manager afterward?
Weird that no one else take it either.

We’re having a small get together the day after our wedding to open gifts, have a BBQ, hang out with family etc before we fly out the next day. If we don’t cut into it at the reception, we’ll cut into it then.

We saved our top tier and ended up eating it 3 months after our wedding because we ran out of freezer space. Needless to say it did not taste good...We ended up reaching out to our baker in order to have him re-create our top layer for our first anniversary. If I could do it over again, I would not have saved the top tier in the freezer. I think that having your baker do an anniversary cake is the way to go.

We cut and served the top layer. We took all the extra cake home and took a Tupperware full on our minimoon. Great midnight snack/breakfast option 😊

Yeah, I didn't think about it until it was handed to me. And everyone was pretty stuffed between the elaborate cocktail hour and 3 course dinner (NJ weddings apparently are "a lot" compared to other places as I've learned lol) so I think everyone was too stuffed to even think about future cake.

We served it because the baker is giving us a free anniversary cake.

We initially planned on having a 4-tier cake and keeping the top tier for ourselves to eat throughout the rest of the weekend/following week. We ended up downsizing to a 2-tier, but there were still some leftovers, so we just took those home.

Still plan on having a little anniversary cake made, though!

We cut and served the top layer at our wedding, and we still have leftovers. After keeping a few slices for ourselves, my husband and I put the remaining leftover cake in cake boxes and handed out to everyone as they left the resort the day after the wedding.

Our bakery made a special top tier for us and packaged it for the freezer.

We wrapped it in extra plastic wrap and stuck it in our (very tiny) freezer for year.

Thawed it out slowly in the fridge for a few days.

It tasted great, actually. ...But it took us DAYS to eat the whole thing, it was a pretty big tier!

We served our top tier at the reception. Our baker made us a fresh topper for our 1 year anniversary at no cost.
