Serving dessert and wedding cake

Amberly, on July 12, 2020 at 11:46 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
My caterers include dessert as part of the meal (and already signed the contract). We have a family friend who is a phenomenal baker gifting us a wedding cake. So cost isn’t a huge issue for this. The catering dessert will be different than wedding cake, but it still feels redundant to have both. Should we just do the cake cutting way later in the evening instead of shortly after dinner? Should we ask the baker to simply make a smaller cake, since it’s unlikely all of our guests will want another dessert?

I had a dessert as part of the meal and a cake too. I actually found that they ate the cake more than the dessert.

I forgot to ask - what is the dessert your caterer is offering ?

Thanks for your input! They’re offering personal/mini chocolate bundt cake and key lime pie. (They offered others but these were our favorites.) Our wedding cake would be more of a strawberry shortcake.

Oh man those sound good! I actually feel like you could skip the cake altogether.

Ditto to this!!!! No one will miss it because, ultimately, they’re getting dessert

You could skip the cake or, since the cake is a gift, you could opt for cupcakes instead and put them into to-go boxes for favors or late night snacks. There are some super cute ways to package up cupcakes.

We’re having such a small wedding (even after the elopement) that we’re thinking just cake for our party. But we really want the tradition of cutting the cake. Maybe you could just do one layer cake top to cut and give the guests a dessert spread instead.

You may have to check your contract to see if the caterer will even allow you to have other food at your wedding. A lot of the time vendors will request that they are the sole person providing the service. You'd also have to check with your venue if they will allow outside catering. Most venues won't allow outside food especially if it isn't provided by a licensed caterer. Also, who would you have serve the cake? Most servers won't serve food unless they have prepared it themselves because they don't want to be legally responsible if someone gets sick from the food they served.

We did a wedding cake as well as a dessert bar with several different dessert options. People ate both!

Can you do the baker's cake as the served wedding cake and the personal bundt cakes/pies from the caterer as take-home favors with cute little boxes to take them home in?
