Serving Alcohol At Wedding

Spencer, on May 19, 2018 at 5:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hi Everybody -

We have a wedding on July 14th, 2018 in CT and we just mentioned to our venue that we are planning on supplying our own beer/wine/liquor and having our caterer supply a bartender. The caterer does not have a liquor license, but normally he highly encourages the bride and groom to take out wedding liability insurance that covers alcohol-related injuries, etc. I talked to the venue and they said they will not budge on somebody serving alcohol unless they have a liquor license, due to some CT specific liquor laws.

Can somebody help us? Fiance is freaking out and want to settle this without costing us a fortune!

Thank you Smiley smile

Spencer

Of course you can't serve liquor without a liquor license. That's a big one! Here in Ontario you can apply for a special event permit which allows one of the hosts to have a temporary liquor license. All bartenders must be accredited in Ontario and no one else can serve alcohol. And yes, purchase liability insurance for your event separately as well.

I suspect there is something similar you could do?

You can apply for a one-day liquor license from the state and get wedding liability insurance for reasonable price. People on here have recommended WedSafe. Our venue is the same, is BYBO but requires a liquor license to serve and 1 million liability insurance for the event. Lucky, our cater has liability insurance and a liquor license we can borrow for $460 but we need to use their bartenders. If you haven't signed with your current cater, I recommend finding another cater that has both liability insurance and a liquor license you can borrow should you don't want to take the extra steps mentioned above.

I’d use WedSafe. You can get one day coverage - very common request from venues and nothing to be stressed about! 😊

Yeah that's what I wanted to do, but it seems like they want more than that. I figured if I used WedSafe they would be okay since the liability shifts to us and then we'd be covered by the insurance. But guess not!

I just paid $190 for liquor liability insurance . It still saves money when you are supplying your own alcohol. I still have licensed bar tenders
