Service charge/tip; is this the same??

Genevieve, on January 23, 2020 at 2:04 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6
I noticed there was a “service charge” on my catering contract and I want to make sure this is also know as tip or how does that exactly work? In the restaurant biz, that is also put on checks as gratuity. TIA

I would ask your venue...I had to ask, and my service charge was the tip. For other places, it is not.

Some places it is the same as tip, but some places it is not. Definitely ask the venue, because you don't want to double-tip but you also don't want to not tip at all!

Ask them what “service charge” covers specifically. Some places it covers gratuities, but a lot of wedding businesses it does not.

No service charge and tip are not the same. Service charge includes hourly pay for the caterers and other expenses. You give gratuity after your wedding Smiley smile

Like others have said, some places the service charge is the tip and other places it is not. When I was looking over my catering contract both were listed and I had to ask, because I thought they were the same thing. The service charge is us paying them to come and set up, help serve, clean up, etc. What is nice is our caterer is included the gratuity in the full price of our contract so it's pre-payed and we don't have to worry about making sure they get their tip at the end of the night. I would just ask them what the service charge covers.

I asked my venue and he said the service charge is the tip and no need to tip further. Not sure what we are doing yet.
